Shallow - overhung - blade fans; leakage-preventing devices. - For the purpose of prevent ing backflow of air between the blades of a centrifugal fan and the side-walls of the casing, annular flanges or extensions c, d of truncated conical shape are arranged on each side of the casing concentrically with the shaft and just beyond the blades, the distance h between the outer edges of the flanges being very slightly less than the width i of the blades. The flanges or extensions may be made of metal, of wood, partly of metal and partly of wood, or of brickwork &c. Suitable constructions are described, the cross-section of a brickwork flange for example being indicated in Fig. 2 by the letters c', d', e<1>.
