Abstract
83. Voigtsberger, A. W. C., West, H., and West, J. Jan. 1. [Addition to 9195/12.] Ciphers and codes.-The apparatus described in the parent Specification is modified to prevent inaccurate movement of the control disks, by the use of toothed wheels in constant mesh in place of the racks and toothed rollers. The sliding plates bearing letters and numerals are replaced by disks o loosely mounted on a shaft r and attached to gear-wheels p constantly in mesh with gear-wheels g loosely mounted on a shaft b. The gear-wheels g are each moved by a lever i passing through a slit k in the casing a and carrying a spring-pressed angle-lever n, the upper end of which normally engages indentations l in the slits k. The lower end of the lever n engages between the teeth of a wheel h when the upper end of the lever is pressed against the lever i. The wheel h is similar to, and fixed on the shaft b alongside of, the wheel g. Gear-wheels c, also fixed on the shaft b, engage toothed wheels f on the control disks c. The wheels g can thus move the disks o only when connected up to the wheels h, which are in fixed connexion with the control disks e. Plate slides t revoluble about the shaft r, and cross-slides u, v, w, are provided.
