Abstract

141,852. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., Chicken, C. B., and Scott, G. Feb. 28, 1919. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises a disk 10 which drives a parallel roller 17 through a ball 21, which is moved across the disk and along the roller to vary the speed. The ball 21 is moved by a carriage 19 which has rollers 22, 23 bearing on the ball opposite the disk and roller respectively. The ball is kept pressed against the disk by a spring 16, Fig. 1, thrusting the disk upwards, there being a roller bearing 26 between the carriage 19 and a fixed frame 18. The roller 23 is supported in a frame 232 pivoted upon the carriage, and is made to thrust the ball against the roller 17 by springs 24, Fig. 4. The ball is constrained to move with the carriage by additional rollers 25. The roller 17 may drive the disk.
