Calculating-apparatus.-A machine is shown by means of which numbers can be added together in the order in which they are spoken or expressed, from.left to right, and at the same time printed on a strip. The keys r, with their types p, are mounted on sector-shaped pieces o, in such a way that any particular key upon any one of the sectors may be pulled forward, so as to project slightly beyond the others, as shown at 2, and at the same time, the sector, guided by the pin z sliding in the groove w<1> in the fixed plate v, carries the toothed segment e into engagement with the numbered wheel c. During the downward stroke, the pin z slides in the groove w, and at the end of the stroke the type prints the number on the band of paper t. On the return movement, the sector is pushed inwards so as to disengage the toothed segment e from the wheel c, the pin z passing through one of the horizontal grooves x<1>, and along the groove x. The number wheels c', c' are capable of sliding along the shaft g,under the action of the bevel surfaces m<2>, m<3> of the segments e<2>, e<3>, and the spring f, so that when the segment e<2> is operated to engage with the tens wheel c', the unit wheel c' is displaced so that the pin n' is out of engagement with the carrying-over wheel d<2>. Similarly, when the segment e<3> is operated, both wheels c', c<2> are displaced.
