Abstract
127,254. Tioli, L. Sept. 15, 1915, [Convention date]. Type-lever machines.-A syllabic type-lever machine is arranged in two or more sections each comprising a complete set of letter keys and typelevers having printing-points at letter-space intervals, for example three sections 1, 2, 3, Fig. 1, with printing-points 7, 8, 9. The sections may be identical, except that the left-hand section-may have provision for numerals and signs, as well as capital letters, for use in conjunction with carriage-shift mechanism having two shift positions. Each section has a space-key 10, 11, 12 and cooperates through the key-levers with a variable letter-spacing mechanism, described below, so that each section has a corresponding letter-space movement, for example, one, two, and three units for the three sections 1, 2, 3 respectively, and the sections can be operated separately with the corresponding spacing, or in combination with the total spacing corresponding to the section on the right of the series. Keyboards.-The keys are developed in depth instead of width, for example in seven rows of three and four keys alternating, as shown in Fig. 1. The keys 4, Fig. 2, when depressed, enter recesses 5 in an inclined top plate 6. Letter-spacing mechanism.-The key-levers of the sections 1, 2, 3, Fig. 3, co-operate with a. universal bar 26 which is offset in sections 38, 39, 40 to give three degrees of lift. The universal bar raises, through a connexion 28, a member 31 carrying fast and loose dogs co-operating with an internally toothed escapement-wheel 13, which runs in guides 16, 17 and is connected by a bridge 15 to a pinion shaft 14. According to the lift given to the member 31, the loose dog engages with one or other of three steps on one limb of a U-shaped member 25, the other limb of which serves as the stop for limiting the return movement of the loose dog The member 25 is depressible on a support 30 against the returning action of springs, so that it can drop with the loose dog in the downward movement of the member 31.
