1,211,218. Typewriters. M. WATARI. 8 Dec., 1967 [10 Dec., 1966], No. 55988/67. Heading B6F. Power-operated braille typewriters.-A braille typewriter includes type heads 51 formed with recesses corresponding to braille characters and coacting with pins 68 which selectively project from or are retracted within a flat platen 57, 62, the selection of the positions of the pins 68 being effected by code bars 91a ... 91f operated by the keys 26. The keys act through levers 24, 27, 31 to engage a hook 40 with a continuously rotating snatch roll 23, which pivots a bell crank 36 and actuates a type bar 47 through a link 50. The hook 40 also pivots a lever 41 which selectively depresses one or more code bars 91a ... 91f, each code bar coacting with a lever 87 to operate a pin 68 through springs 90, levers 82a ... 82f, chains (85), Fig. 4 (not shown), levers (79), wires (78) and pin operating levers 72. Impact adjustment.-Initially adjustable stop screws 56 limit the travel of the hook 40 in contact with the snatch roll 23 to effect letterby-letter and impact adjustment. Paper supports.-A character-size platen is formed as part of the plate 62 mounted on the bar 57 which is slidable on a cross piece 16 and is mounted on a carriage 96 slidably mounted in a guide rail 97 fixed to the crosspiece 16. Six holes formed in the platen accommodate the pins 68. A rubber plate 69 slidably mounted in a groove on the plate 62 is movable into and out of a position below the platen to form a support for simultaneously typing alphanumeric characters formed on the type heads. The paper 99 is fed between roller couples 108, 110 and 107, 109 which are geared to the carriage shaft 101. Paper-guide plates 111, 112, 113 are provided.
