One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a typewriting machine .in which the carriage together with practically all of the operating mechanism including the ribbon mechanism, escapement mechanism, propelling mechanism and bell, as well as the line-spacing mechanism, may be mounted upon a support and moved with the carriage into compact relation to another'part of the machine when not in use and to overhang the key-levers or typebars in order that the machine may occupy much less space when compact than when in use, to adapt the machine to be readily transported or made into a package suitable for such purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and ellicient mechanism for typewriting machines which while foldablc with the carriage into compact relation to another part of the machine, has the ribbon and the escapement mechanisms adapted to be operated by the key-levers when in a normal or working position only, and which when moved to a compact position is out of operative relation with the keylevers.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine which is light, durable end effective in use, and in which the carriageand support may be moved vertically toadapt the type-heads or blocks to have a "plurality of characters thereon.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of' this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

4Vi'hile I show the invention as more particularly adapted to be applied to the form of typewriter disclosed in the patent granted to Frank S.`Rose, No. 754,242, dated March 8th, 1904, in which the carriage and platen has a vertical shift, and is adapted to fold over and above the linger keys, and in whichthe type-bars have a front strike for visible writing, it will be understood that many features of the invention are equally adapted for use in connection with other forms oftypewriting machines, and that the invention is not limited to the particular construction and arrangement of the parts as herein shown.
The iframe 10 on which the several parts are mounted may be of any suitable construction and may consist of side plates or members 11, a rear plate or member 12 integral with the side plates and with an intermediate transverse bar or plate 13 serving to brace the side members ll substantially centrally thereof, all of which may be of aluminum for the purpose of making the same light, or of sheet metal or other material- Extending transversely of theY frame at the front thereof is a bar l-'i which may be covered by a strip of felt l5 or other sound-deadening material and which serves to limit the downward movement of the key-levers 16, and on the outer end of theI levers 1G are the finger-pieces or keys 1T, having` the usual characters as in the ordinary form of machine vand which form a part of a universal keyboard.. frame is arranged transversely of the machine, and said bar is provided with a collar tappet or projecting part which is adapted to engage the head 60 of the arm 58 to move the escapement dogs against the 'action of the spring 63. This bar is held in the upper end of the levers or arms 70 of the rocking frame. The arms 7U are pivoted on opposite sides of the machine to 'a transversely-extending rod or bar 7l, and in the upper end of each of said arms 70 is a vertically arranged slot 72. A bell-crank or angular lever 7 3 is pivoted at 71 to a part of the machine frame on each side thereof, and has one end, as by a screw 7 5, guided in the slot 72 of its coperating arm 70 and its other end connected by a link or rod 7 6 to a universal bar 77. This universal bar 77 extends transversely of the machine over each key-lever so that as each key is depressed, it will raise the bar T7 and move the bell-crank levers 7 3 on their pivot 71- and force the bar 68 outward and thereby move the escapement arm 58 carrying the dogs against the tension of the spring 63.
The arms or levers 70, Fig. l, may be forced inward by the springs 773L which are held at one end to the part l2 of the frame and engage the levers 70 at their free ends. An adjusting screw 77b is adapted to engage each spring 77ix and serves to vary the pressure of the springs against the levers 70, and by means of the bell-crank levers 73 and links 76, the universal bar 77 will be forced against the action of the key-levers with any desired pressure. This action of the springs 77a not onl y serves to permit the force required to operate the type-.bars to be changed, but they serve to restore the typebars and key-levers to their normal position.- If desired the springs 28 for each key- *lever may be dispensed with.
The machine is provided with means for raising the entirecarriage bed and mechanisms carried thereby to differentheights, to position the platen 32 properly with respect to the upper case characters and the figures on the type-heads or blocks so that the same will properly strike the work held by the platen, and means are also provided whereby the platen and the mechanism movable therewith may be locked in its different positions. The cap-shifting lever 78 has its inner end fixed to a transverse rod 79, which is pivoted tothe' machine frame. The lever 78 is extended inward and engages the rod 90 so that the two rods 79 and 80 may be moved in unison, and projecting from the rod 79 is an arm 81 in which one end of the rod 8() is fixed. This arm 81 has a pivotal connection with the rod 71 at its inner end1 and said rod at its ends engages vertically movable slides 82 each of which is movable ii a bearingr 83 located at the upper end of a bracket which is held to the rear part of end connected by a link 86 to the rod O and l through the latter' to a lever 87, the said llink being provided with a slot 88 which spans the rod 80 so as to permit a relative independent movement of the rod and the link. The rod is held in the lever 87, and said lever has its outer end pivoted to the transverse rod 71 which operates the slides 82 connected therewith as already-described in connection with the cap-shift lever and which causes the platen, carriage and mechanism to be elevated, but to a different degree to that obtained by depressing the shift lever 78. A bracket or part 89 extends outwardly from the top of one of the slides 82 and said bracket may be fastened to the inner surface of an arm 90, and at the opposite end of the frame is a similar arm 91. These arms 90 and 91 project outwardly and are pivotally held to bars 92 forming a part of the foldable support, the said bars 92 beingheld at one end to the carriage bed whereby the platen and mechanism carried thereby may be folded over as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
A lever or arm 93 is. pivoted at 91 to one of the sides of the frame, Figs. 2 to 4, and this lever is normally forced in one direction or toward the keys by means of a spring-95, the upper end of which engages one of the brackets 8l. The upper end of the lever-*93 is provided with a head 96, and this head may be provided with two screws 97 and 98 or other means which are adapted to engage an inturned end 99 of the bracket or plate 89 to limit the upward movement of the carriage bed, platen and mechanism movable therewith according to the position of said arm 93. This arm or lever 93 is provided with a projection 100 which has its outer edge beveled, and is adapted to be engaged by the inner beveled end of the figure-shift lever so that when said latter lever is Adepressed the inner edge thereof will engage the cam projection 100 and force the lever 93 inward to place the screws 98 in alinement with the inturned end 99 of the plate or bracket 89. At the same time that the iigure-shift lever is depressed, the slides 82 will be elevated through the link 86, and arm 87 so as to lift the carriage, platen and mechanism movable therewith until the inturned end engages the screw 98 or other device thereby limiting the upward movement of the part referred to, and as soon as said lever is released, the parts will return to their normal position. The screw 98 is employed to permit nice adjustment, and the screw 97 is arranged to normally engage the inturned end 99 of the plate 89. This screw 97 works in connection with the cap-shift lever, and when the latter operates the transverse rod 7l and the slides 82 to elevate the same and the means supported thereby, the inturned .end of the bracket S9 engages the lower end of the screw 97 thus limiting the upward movement of said slides. The screw 97 is moved inward out of the path of movement of the inturned end 99 when the ligure-shift lever is depressed and places .the screw 98 in supported by the slides 82 may be locked in either of the elevated positions in which the same is moved by either. the cap-shift levers or the ligure-shift lever. To effect this a lock-lever 101 may be employed. This lever is pivoted at 102 adjacent to the inner end of the cap-shift lever 85, and has its lower end,
as 102, bent in the form of a hook and provided with two recessed parts 103 and 104 which are adapted to engage the transversl rod 8O or a projection on the arm S7 which is moved by both of the shift levers. As will be seen when the cap-shift lever is operated, it will raise the transverse rod a certain distance, and by forcing the lock-lever 101 downward to the position shown in full lines 'in Fig. 3 the slides S2 or elements will be locked in their intermediate position. This platen shift mechanism is the same as that disclosed in my divisional application Sr. No. 499,876, filed .lune il, 1909.

The ribbon 151 may be fastened to a sleeve part of the spools, and said spools are supported by brackets 153 which are secured to the bars 92, and are each provided with a ribbon guide 154. and said-loop may bearranged ina substantially vertical plane. Each spool sleeve is provided with a gear-156 which is engaged by a worm, and on the spindle or shaft 159 of each worm is a ratchet wheel 160 which is engaged by a pawl 161 carried by the upper end of each vlever 70, so that when .said lever is moved the pawl will be made to impart a step-by-step movementl to the worm and the ribbon whenever any of the keys are depressed, the said ratchet wheels each being engaged by a spring-pressed pawl or detent 162v to prevent the ratchet wheel from moving except `in one direction. As will he seen, the gears 156 are both moved when the ratchet wheels 16O\v are operated through the depression of thefkeys but on the return movement vof the levers 70, and only that spool is operated in which the nut147 has been tightened, theribbon thereby being made to move in either direction according to which spool is loose.
The ribbon 151 passes inwardly to the front part of the platen as shown best in Fig. 5, and is passed through the loop orl slotted portion formed in the endof a vi bratory arm 164.
