This invention relates to typewrtting machines and is directed more especially to iIIlin mechanism employed for shitting the platen tor ditl'erent case printing.

Arranged upon either side of roller 22, in the present in- .stance, are rollers 23 and 24, said rollers being held in position by means of a leaf spring 25 which conforms to the contour of the upper surface of laterally extending pivots of rollers 23 and 24 and urges them in a downward direction, the spring 25 in its middle portion extending beneath the pivot 26 of roller 22 and urging the same in an upward direction. These three rollers constitute a spring block upon which the channel bar rides when the carriage is fed for letter spacing or on its return movement to begin a new line of writing, the construction of said block being such that no slack can exist in the channel bar inasmuch as the outside rollers are held in engagement with the lower wall of the channel while the intermediate roller is held in contact with the upper wall thereof.
Connected tothe free end of lever 20, as by means of a universal joint comprising a ball 27 and a socket 28, is a floating lever 29, said floating lever being pivotally attached at 30 intermediate its ends with a shift lever 31 and similarly attached at its forward end at 32 with another shift lever 33. Shift levers 31 and 33, which, in the present instance, are arranged near the lefthand side of the machine, extend transversely therethrough, and are journaled upon a fixed pivot 34 in therear portion thereof. Shift lever is provided with a dip, as at 35, to accoi'nl'nodate the pivot 30 which connects floating lever 29 with shift lever 31. A clip 3 is adjust-ably mounted upon floating lever 29 intermediate its pointof pivotal connectiolrwith the shift levers and held in adjustment thereon by means of a set screw 37, said clip being urged in an upward direction by' means'; of retractile restoring spring 38 attached thereto as at 39 and to a fixed part of the machine. This spring, avhicli, through floating lever 29, urges the shift levers 1n an upward direction against a'fixed cushioned stop 40, operates to restore the platen frame to a normalcentral position when the same is shifted, as will hereinafter be made more clear. At this point it may be noted that in the present instance stop 40 is so disposed that when the shift levers 31 and 33 are in engagement therewith, the platen through the system of leverage above described will be held in a normal central position which "will enable the same to receive impressions from the middle type of the type bars.
Each of the shift levers 31 and 33 in the present instance is provided with forward finger extensions 41 and 42 which are swiveled thereto, as at 43 and 44, said extensions lying in contact with the lateral sides of the inner ends of the shift levers and are provided with notched portions 45 and 46 to receive tongues or projections 47 and 48 formed upon the forward end ofthe shift levers.
It will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings that the notches in the finger extensions are constructed slightly wider than the tongues. in order to allow a slight relative movement between the parts of the shift levers, the engagement of the tongues with the walls of the notches serving to limit such movement. Extensions 41 and 42 extend forwardly, then-upwardly and at their upper ends are provided with finger keys 49 and 50 respectively. Each of shift levers 31 and 33 has pivoted upon the pivots 43 and 44, which constitute the at: taching means for the finger extensions thereto, locking members or detents 51' and 52 which when the shift levers are in raised 7 7 positions against fixed stop 40, rest upon a fixed abutment comprised, 111 the present 1nstance, by a bracket or shoulder 53 extending laterally from the frame of the machine. Thus the shift levers are normally locked in their upward positions by means of detents 51 and 52 and the platen thereby locked in its normal central position. Connected integrally in the present instance with detents 51 and 52 are arms 54 and 55 which extend parallel with finger extensions of the shift levers. said arms at their upper ends being provided with turned over portions or finger keys 53 and 57. Arms 54 and 55 are held in contact with the finger extensions by means of clips 58 and 59, which in the present instance are bent thereabout. Coil springs, one of which is shown at 60, serve to retain detents 51 and 52 upon the shoulders 53. The upper ends of arms 54 and 55, being in engagement with the finger keys of forward extensions 41 and 42 of the shift keys, also operate to hold said finger extensions in their uppermost positions, which positions are deter-mined by the engagement of the tongues 47 and 48 with the upper pivotal movement between the main portion of the shift lever, and the forward eXtension thereof, such movement causing the detent or locking member carried thereby to ride off the shoulder 58, whereupon the shift lever will be unlocked and further prcsslgire thereon will cause the same to swing to its downward position to shift the platen.
Each of the locking detents. 51 and 52, is
provided with forward extension or catch. 61, which is adapted, when the shift lever is in a depressed condition, to take under a shoulder (.52 which extends upon the frame of the machine, such engagement serving to lock the shift levers in their downward positions and the platen in shifted positions. This operation is effected by the operatorconcurrently depressing the finger key of one of armslil or 55 when the shift key is depressed. v with shoulder 62 and the shift lever held in a depressed position, a slight pressure on the shift lever will disengage the parts, whereupon one of the springs (50 will re tract the locking member and withdraw the catch from the shoulder, thereby allowing a free return of the shift lever to normal position.
Pivotcd', as at (33, upon the rear wall of the machine is a link (34. which, at its outer end, is pivotally attached to -a similar link (55 journaled upon a stud screw (36 upon lever 20 intermediate its ends. A similar link 67 is pivoted in the frame of the machine beneath. lever 20 and is similarly connected to stud screw (ill by means of a link (38. Those two pairs of connected links constitute a double toggle joint either one of which when straightened out operates noiselcssly to limit the up or down stroke of the platen carriage. The toggles are returned to the position shown in Fig. -'l-, which shows the platen frame in a normal central position by means of a spring (31) which is interposed bctwccn the points of pivotal connection of each pair of toggle links. v
In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive there is shown a nnulii'ication of the mechanism for limiting or arresting the upward and downward shilling movements of the platen. This mechanism comprises a U-shaped member 70. mounted upon the rear wall of the frame work of the machine, said Ushaped member being mounted upon eccimtrics Tl so. as to be capable of a slight adjustment. Journalcd upon lever 20 intermediate its ends is an arm 72 which, at'its outer end, carries a roller 73 which takes between parallel arms 74 and 75 of U-shaped member 70. This roller, when lever 20 is raised or lowered, rolls along the upper or lower inner surfaces When :atch 61. is in en a ement of the arms 74 and 75 of member 70, and whenthe position shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is reached, operates through arm 72 and lever 90 to limit the shifting movement of the platen frame. Arm 72 is urged to the position shown in Fig. 5 by means of a coil spring 70 attached at one end of lever 20 and at its upper end to an arm 77 extending from the pin 7 8 upon which arm 72 is fixed. This constiau-tion also enables the lever 20 to be arrested 'When swung upwardly or downwardly by the shift levers in a silent manner, inasmuch as the same is arrested without any impact or concussion. Spring 76 also aids in the returning of the platen carriage to its normal central position.
Having thus described the construction of my invention, the operation thereof may now be understood. Assuming the parts to be in normal position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, a depression of either of the shift keys 4!) or 50 will first, as above described, cause the locking detent carried thereby to ride from its shoulder 53, there by allowing a free dppression of the shift key, the other shift key remaining in locked position and the pivotal connection thereof with floating lever 29 forming a stationary fulcrunr upon which said floating lever swings under compulsion of the lever being depressed. The swinging of floating lever 29 will cause lever 20 to swing upward or downward in accordance with the particular shift lever depressed and through arm 2] and the roller block cause a corresponding movement of the platen, such movement being, as above described, limited by the straightening of one of the toggles com-'- prised by links (34 and (55 or (37 and 68 or in" the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, by the n'iorement of roller 73 along the inner periphery of the arm of U-shaped member 70. When pressure is released upon the shift levers the parts return to normal position through the influence of retractile spring 3Swh/ich acts on floating lever 29 intermediate its points of attaclnnent with the shift levers, said operation being assistcd in measure by means of the coil spring (3%) which serves to fold the toggle or, as shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive by spring 7th which operates to return the parts to the position shown in Fig. 5. If the operator desires to retain the'platen in,a shifted position, it is only n-ecessaryto depress the lock key concurrently with the shift key, whe e upon the catch 61 of the locking detent will" take under the fixed shoulder (32 arranged in front thereof, whereby the platen will be held in a shifted position until a further depression of the depressed shift key will allow, spring to disengage the catch from the shoulder.
It will accordingly be seen that I have provided mechanism well adapted to attain, among others, all the objects and aims of my invention in an exceedingly simple and eflicient manner. The platen is held immovable in normal position, thus allowing erasures to be made without causing the carriage to be depressed under the pressure necessarily employed in such operations. The platen, moreover, is readily locked in either its raised or lowered position and is returned to its normal central position by means of a single restoring spring which also serves to return both of the shift levers to their raised positions. The means employed to arrest the shifting movements of the carriage in both embodiments herein shown operate without noise, the platen being arrested without any impact or concussion.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a front strike mach'ne of the above type, it is obvious that tile same may be employed with great facility in many other types o-f-machines although the same is of peculiar value in the type of machine shown herein.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall. be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the lan guage used in the following; claims is intended to cover all of the generic and 51c cific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetwecn.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a typewriting machine, in combination a shiftable platen, a shiitlever connected therewith, means for locking said lever in normal position, and means associated with said shift lever for releasing; said locking means when it is attempted to depress the lever.
2. In a typewriting' machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, of a pair of shift levers, and a lever pivotally connected at diiferent 'mints in its length with each of said shiftlevcrs and also connected with the platen, said lever being; adapted to swing upon either of said points of connection with the shift levers as a fulcrum when the other of said levers is depressed.

4. In a typewriting machine, the combi-/ nation with the platen carriage normally held in an intermediate position and adapted to shift to either side of said intermediate position for different case printing, of a pivotally mounted lever, a rod connected with said lever and with the carriage which furnishes an actuating connection between those parts, a pair of shift levers, and a second lever connecting said first lever with each of said shift levers, said shift levers when depressed being adapted to shift the platen to either side of its normal printing position for different case printing.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable carriage, of means for shifting the carriage from a normal in termediate position to a position at either side thereof for different case printing, comprising a pair of shift levers, a lever connected to each of said shift levers, a second lever pivotally mounted in the rear portion of the machine and having a connection with said first lever, and a rod connected with said second lever and said carriage which furnishes an actuating connection between those parts.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pair of shift levers normally locked in raised positions, and a shifta-ble platen normally resting in an intermediate printing position and locked in such position by the shift levers.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pair of shiftlevers normally locked in their raised position but adapted to automatically unlock when pressed, and a shiftable platen normally locked in an in tcrmediate printing position by the shift levers adapted to be shifted in opposite directions thereby.

25. In a typewriting machine, the combiof pivot-ally connected members, one of which is connected to said movable part and the other to a relatively fixed part of the machine, and means connected to one of said parts adapted to aid in returning said parts to normal position.
26. In a typewriting machme, the combination with a shiftable laten, of a shift lever connected therewit and a locking member swiveled upon I said shift lever adapted automatically to lock the same in a raised position whereby the platen will be locked in normal position, said locking member being also adapted to lock the shift lever in a depressed position thereby locking the platen in a shifted position.
27. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a shiftable platen, a shift lever connected therewith, a locking member swiveled upon the shift lever. and adapted when the same is in a raised position'to engage a shoulder extending from a fixed portion of the machine whereby the shift lever will be locked in its raised position andj the platen thereby locked in normal position, said locking member being adapted automatically to become disengaged from said shoulder when the shift lever is de ressed, and a finger key connected with said, ockmg member adapted to engage the same beneath a second shoulder extending from a fixed portion of the machine whereby said shift lever may be locked in a'depressed position and the platen thereby locked in a shifted position.
I 28. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, of a two-part shift lever connected therewith, the parts of said shift lever being capable of a limited relative movement, and a locking member carried by one of said parts adapted normally to hold said shift lever in a raised position, said locking member, owing to a relative movement of the parts of said shift lever when the same is depressed, being adapted automatically to unlock the same, whereby the platen may be shifted.
29. In a typewriting machine, in combi nation, a shiftable platen, a shift lever connected therewith, said shift lever comprising two members swiveled to each other and capable of a limited relative movement, a locking member carried by said shift lever adapted when the same is in a raised position to rest upon a shoulder extending from a fixed portion of the machine, said locking member, due to the relative movement of the parts of said shift lever, being adapted to ride off said shoulder when the shift lever is depressed'to shift the platen.
30. In a t-ypewriting machine, in combination, a shiftable platen, a shift lever connected therewith, said shift lever comprising a plurality of parts swiveled together and capable of a limited relative movement, a shoulder extending from a fixed portion of the frame of the machine, a locking mom bcr swiveled upon said shift lever and resting upon said shoulder when the shift lever is in a raised position, and means connecting said locking member with one of the parts of said shift lever whereby when said shift lever is depressed a relative movement will take place between the parts thereof, thereby unlocking the shift lever from its locked position and allowing the same to shift the platen.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, of a shift lever connected therewith, said shift lever having a finger extension journalcd thereon and capable of a limited movement relative thereto, a locking member carried by'said' shift lever, a shoulder extending from a fixed W- 'tion of the machine upon whi h said locking member rests when the shlf lever is in a normal position whereby the same is locked in a raised position and the platen thereby locked in normal position, said locking member having a positive connection with the finger extension of said shift lever, whereby when the same is depressed a relative movement will take place between said finger extension and the shift lever, thereby causing said locking member to bedisengaged from said shoulder to allow said shift lever to be depressed and the platen thereby shifted.
32. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a shiftable platen, a shift lever connected therewith, and a locking-key swiveled upon said shift lever adapted normally same in a raised position, thereby locking the platen in normal position, said locking key being automatically moved from a Flockingposition when the shift lever is struck and when struck concurrently with said shift lever being adapted to lock the same in a depressed position. and fixed means with which said locking'key engages.
34-. In a typewriting machine, thecombination with a shiftable platen normally held in intermediate position and adapted to be shifted in opposite directions therefrom, a lever having a connection with the platen, a second lever having a pivotal connection with saidfirst lever and adapted to swing the same in opposite directions, and movwith said first lever adapted to determine the shifted positions of the platen.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen i'i'ormally held in an intermediate printing position, of a pair of shift levers, of a lever pivotally connected at different points in its length with said shift levers, means for connecting said lever with the platen, said lever being adapted to swing upon each of its points of attachment with said shift levers as a fulcrum to shift the platen to either side of its normal position, and means connected with said lever intermediate its point. of attachment with the shift lever adapted to restore the platen to normal position, said means being also adapted to restore the shift levers to normal position.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen normally held in an.-interinediate printing position, of a pair of shift levers, a lever to which both of said levers are pivotally connected at different points in the length thereof, said lever being connected with the platen, the pivotal connection of one of said levers with one of said shift leversoperating as a stationary fulcrmn when the other of said shift levers is depressed, and a restoring spring for the platen operating through said lever at a point intermediate the points of attach-- ment thereof with said shiftlevers.
37. In a typewrlting machine, the combination with the traveling carriage, of a platen frame provided with a channel bar mounted therein, a platen carried by said platen frame, means operating through said channel bar for shifting said platen frame to carry the platen to another printing position, and movable means operating through said channel bar adapted to interpose a yielding resistance to a movement of said platen frame, said latter means also operating to limit the shifting movement of the platen.
38. In a. typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage, of a platen frame sliding in ways therein, a platen carried by said platen frame, a channel bar carried by the platen frame, means operating through said channel bar adapted to shift the platen from a normal intermediate printing posi tion to a printing position at either side thereof, and movable means operating through said channel bar adapted to determine the shifted positions of the platen.
39. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage, of a platen frame sliding in ways provided therein and adapted to rest in an intermediate printing position, said platen frame being provided with a channel bar and platen carried by said platen frame, a lever pivoted in the rear portion of the machine and extending longitudina ly i thereof, an arm extended upwardly from said lover, a block comprised by a plurality of resiliently connected rollers carried by the upper end of said arm, said block riding in said channel bar, a pair of shift levers connected with said lever adapted to swing the same in opposite directions, whereby the platen will be shifted to either side of its normal printing position, and means operating through said lever adapted to interpo'se a yielding resistance to the swinging movements thereof, said means being also adapted to determine the shifted positions of the platen.
40. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage provided with Ways, of a platen the frame of which is slidably mounted in. said ways, a channel bar connected with the platen, a plurality of resiliently connected rollers located in said channel bar, a lever pivotally supportedin the rear of the machine and extending longitudinally thereof, anv arm connecting said lever with said rollers, a pair of shift levers and a second lever connecting said first lever with each of said shift levers, said shift levers when depressed being adapted to shift the platen to either side of its normal printing position for different ease printing.
41.. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage having ashiftable platen framefor carrying the platen, of means for sh ting the platen from a nor mal intermediate position, comprising a pair of shift levers, a lever connected to each of said shift levers, a second lever pivotally mounted in the rear portion of the. machine having a universal connection with said first lever, and an arm connecting said second; lever with the platen frame.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage provided with vertically disposed ways, of a platen frame mounted to slide in said Ways, a platen carried by said platen frame, said platen frame being provided in its lower portion with a channel bar, means operating through said channel bar to shift the platen frame to carry the platen from a normal intermediate printing position to a printing position at either side thereof, comprising a pair of shift levers extending transversely of the machine and pivoted in the rear portion thereof, a floating lever pivotally connected with each of said shift levers, a second lever pivoted in the rear portion of the machine and having its opposite end connected with said floating lever, an arm extending up- Wardly from said second lever, and a plurality of rollers carried by said arm, said rollrs riding in said channel bar.
44. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage provided with vertical ways, of a platen frame slidably mounted in said ways, a platen carried by said platen frame having in its lower portion a longitudinally extended channel bar, and means for shifting the platen frame to carry the platen from an intermediate printing position to a printing position at either side thereof, comprising a pair of shift levers extending transversely to the machine and fulcrumed in the rear portion thereof, a floating lever having a pivotal connection with each of said shift levers whereby when one of said levers is depressed the pivotal position of the other shift lever with said lever operates as a fulcrum upon which the latter swings to shift the platen, a
second lever fulcrumed at one end in therear portion of the machine and having its other end connected for universal movement with floating lever, an arm extended upwardly from said second lever, a roller journaled upon said arm and located in said channel bar, a roller located in said channel bar to either side of said first roller and resiliently connected therewith, and a restoring spring for the platen operating through said floating lever at a point intermediate its connections with said shift levers.
45. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage, of a platen frame shiftably mounted therein, a platen carried by said platen frai'e, means for shifting the platen frame to carry the platen from a normal printing position to another printing position, and movable means connected with the'platen and also connected with a fixed portion of the machine adapted to arrest a shifting movement thereof.
46. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the carriage, of a platen frame mounted therein and adapted to be shifted upward and downward from a normal printing position, a platen carried by said platen frame, and means connected with the platen frame and also connected with a fixed portion of the machine adapted to arrest the shifting movements thereof.
47. In a typewriting machine, the combination with thecarriage, of a platen frame slidably mounted therein, a platen carried by said platen frame, means for shifting the platen frame to carry the platen from a normal intermediate position, movable means connected with said platen and also with a fixed port on ofthe machine adapted to arrest the platen in shifted positions, and means for resiliently opposing the movement of said arresting means.
49. In a typ'ewriting machine, the oombination with the carriage having a shiftable platen frame adapted tocarry the platen, of
means for shifting the platen from a normal intermediate-position, comprising a pair of shift levers, a lever connected to each of said shift levers, a second lever having a universal connection with said first lever, an arm extending upwardly from said second lever, said platen frame being provided with a channel bar, and a spring roller block mounted upon said arm located in said channel bar.
50. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the traveling carriage. of a platen frame mounted in ways therein adapted to be raised or depressed to carry the platen to a printing position at either side of a normal intermediate position, means for shifting the platen comprising a pair of shift levers, a lever connected to each of said shift levers, a second lever connected with the platen frame, and a universal connection between said first and second levers.
51. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the traveling carriage, of a platen frame slidably mounted therein, said frame being provided with a longitudinally extending channel bar, of means for shifting the platen frame to carry the platen from normal intermediate position, comprising a pair of shift levers, a lever connected to each of said shiftlevers, a second lever pivotally mounted in the rear portion of said machine and having a universal connection with said first lever, an arm extended from said second lever, a roller block carried by said arm and located in the channel bar of the platen frame, and means for arresting the platen when shifted to either side of its normal in termediate posit-ion operating through said second lever.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of shifting mechanism for chang ing the printing relation of the platen and type, a shift key for the same, and a lock key for the shifting mechanism having a finger-engaging part adjacent to the shift key in position to be engaged and moved with the shift key by the same finger that operates the shift key, substantially as set forth. v

In a typewriting machine, the combination of shifting mechanism for changing the printing relation of the platen and type, a shift key, and a shift lock key having a finger engaging part arranged in rear of the shift key in a position to permit the shift key. to be depressed Without touching the lock key or the lock key to beengaged and depressed with the shift key by the tip of the same finger that operates the shift key, said shift lock key being pivotally mount-ed upon the shift key lever.
54. In a typeWritin machine, the combination with a movab e part, of means for silently arresting and limiting the movement of said movable part comprising a pair of pivotally connected other to a relatively fixed part of the machine, and spring means connected to one of said pivotal members adapted to aid in returnin said parts to normal position.
55. n a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen adapted to be shifted to a different printing position, and shifting mechanism therefor, including key-released locking means, acting when in normal position to directly lock the platen in normal position.
