' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Spacing Mechanisms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to lines acin means for visible t-ypewriting machines, and is a division of my pending application Sr. No. 39,967, filed June 23, 1908.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and eliicient means for line spacing the platen of typewriting machines and to positively lock and hold the platen in is shifted position in order that the spacing Will be the same between all of the lines, and to provide simple means whereby the degree of spacing pnray bereadily and quickly changed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the platen may be shifted independent of the line-spacing mechanism.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a transverse section through one end of a carriage, taken on the line I-I of Fig. 2, showing in elevation one means for line-spacing the platen. F ig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of one end of the carriage and platen; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, of the carriage and mechanism for line-spacing the platen, looking in a direction'opposite to that shown in Fig. 1.
While the invention is more particularly adapted for visible typewriting machines in which the platen carriage is foldable forward into overhanging relation to the keyboard or otherwise moved into compact relation to another part of the machine to adapt the machine for transportation and other purposes, the said invention may he used in connection with typewriting and like inachinesof various kinds.
:llhe carriage bed 10 or other support is suitably positioned with relation to other parts of the machine and is provided with a grooved bar 11 along one edge lengthwise thereof and with buttons or other engaging parts 12 along the other edge thereof. The bar l1 and the parts 12 are engaged by the carriage rails 13 and 14 respectively. These rails 13 and LL are mounted upon the base 15 of a carriage l6. A-platen 17 is held to rotate between the ends 18 of the tarriage and said carriage is adapted to move lengthwise of the bed 10, the latter being slotted, as at 19, to permit a part of the escapement mechanism to pass therethrough to engage a. part carried by the carriage in order that the carriage may be moved for letter spacing. The parts as thus described may be the same as in my pending application already referred to or of any preferred construction.
As a means for line-spacing and to prevent the platen from moving beyond a certain point no matter how rapidly the platen may be rotated, I provide a lever :20 which is pivotally held-to the platen shaft 21 near one end thereof and which is forced by a curved spring 22 normally in a direct-ion to force the same against the stop 22 arranged on one of the ends 180i the carriage.
A pawl or dog 23 is pivot at 24: to the lever 20 and has a tooth or engaging part 24 and a heel 24". This pawl is normally forced in one direction by a spring carried by said lever 20, said spring being fastened at one end to said lever 20 and its other end passing through a projection 26 on the pawl. The teeth 2:? of the pawl is adapted to engage the teeth of a ratchet wheel 27 carried by the platen 17, the spring 25 tending normally to force the pawl in a direction to cause the tooth to engage the teeth of said ratchet wheel. The hotel 24" of the pawl when the lever 20 is in the position shown in' Fig. 1, is engaged also by the stop 22 and this causes the pawl to be moved on its pivot 24: against 1e tension of the sprin 25 and to disengage the pawl tooth 9A" rom the teeth of the ratchet Wheel and to hold said tooth disengaged. As soon as the lever 20 is moved away from the st'o 22 this will carry the pawl 28 there- Wit and by reason of the spring 25 will hold the heel of the .{pawl against the stop 22 until the relative movement between the pawl and the lever is such that the tooth 24 will engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel. On further movement of the lever the pawl being carried therewith will by its engagement with the ratchet wheel rotate the platen according to the movement of the lever 20.
A pin or projection 28 is carried by the pawl or dog 23 and extends on one side 16 thereof so as to overlie one edge of the le ver This pin serves as a stop or lock for the line-spacing of the platen, the distance the latter is moved being determined by the position of the movable stop, abut- 15 ment or device 29. The device 29 is substantially triangular in form and in the posi tion shown in higs. l and 3, the platen will be moved a distance corresponding to two lines or a double space at each movement 23 of the lever 20, the tooth 2% of the pawl during the movement of said lever passing to one side of the device 29 until the pin 28 engages said device. I Y A spring 32 is fastened to the carriage 25 at one end and has its free end located adjacent to the device 29 so as to engage either of ti: 2 sidesrthereof. By shifting the device 29 on itspivot so that its side 81 will be engaged by the spring 32, the lever 20 39 with thepawl 23 cannot hove as great a distance as when in the position of the parts shown in the drawings before the pin 28 will engage the device 29, and consequently he platen will be moved only the distance or a single space or one line, the said device 29 being provided with a thumb nut or head 33 by which the same may be rotated on its pivot 30. The pin or stop 28 by engaging the device 29 will positively stop the shifting of the platen thus positively locking the pawl in the teeth of the ratchet wheel 27 and causing the platen to have all the lines exactly spaced, the pin 28 in this locking position being confined between the, 5 device29 and a notched part 34 of the lever 20. The ratchet wheel 27 is normally held against movement in either direction by an arm This arm is pivoted at 36 to the 5Q platen carriage frame and is provided with a tooth or projection 37 at its inner end which is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 27, and said arm is normally forced in one direction by a spring 38 to .55 cause the tooth 37 to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
The arm 35 is provided with a pin or projection 39 which may be engaged by a lever 40. This lever 40 is pivoted at 41 on the outside of the carriage frame and is proided with recesses 42 and 43 at its lower end. The recesses are at different distances from the pivot 41 so that when the lever is shift-e? to permit the recess 43 to engage a; the pin 39, the tooth will be held away from the teeth of the ratchet wheel 27, as shown in the figures, to permit the platen to be rotated freely in either direction, but when said lever is in a position to permit the pin 39 to enter the recess $2 the tooth 7g 37 in this case will engage the teeth of said ratchet wheel thus, tending to hold the platen againstmovement. 'lhe pin 39 projects outward from the arm 35 through a slot 44 in one of the ends 18 of the carriage mine to permit the saidpin to be engaged by the end of the lever to.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that simple and etlicient means is provided whereby the platen may be rotated for linespacing, and during such rotation the platen may be positively'held and locked order that the movement of vthe platen may be positive and each space correspond to the one preceding; that simple means is pro- 'vided whereby the degree of spacing may be changed; and that simple means is provided whereby the platen may be rotated in either direction independent of the line-spacing mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Y 1. In a typewriting machine, the combi- I nation with a support, of a platen mounted on the support, a ratchet wheel movable with the platen, a pivotally held linespacing lever provided with a notched edge, a sprin -retained pawl carried by the linespacing lever, a device for limiting the movement of the lever, and a projection on the pawl adapted to engage the device and the notched part of the lever for governing the movement of'said lever.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted on the support,a ratchet wheel movable with the platen, a pivotally held line-spacing lever axially arranged with respect to the platen, a springretained pawl carried by 110 the line-spacing lever, a device for limiting the movement of the lever, and a projection on the pawl adapted to engage the device and a part of the lever for governing themovement of said lever and tohold the 5 pawl in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a carriage mounted on said support, a lever mounted on the carriage, means for forcing the lever in one direction, a pawl movable with the lever, a ratchet engaged by said pawl, a stop adapted to be engaged by both the lever and pawl, an adjustable abutment arranged in the path of movement of the lever, and means carried by the pawl adapted to engagesaid abutment and be locked between said lever and the abutment.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a line-spacing lever mounted on the carriage, a ratchet wheel, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage the ratchetj wheel, means adapted to positively disengage the pawl from the ratchet wheel, an abutment arranged in the path of said lever and to limit the movement thereof and to hold the pawl in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, and means whereby the pawl may be positively held between the abutment and the lever 100 at the end of its movement.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen mounted on said carriage, a ratchet wheel carried by the platen, a horizontally arran ed arm pivotally held'at the inner side 0% one end of the carriage and having a tooth adapted to i normally engage the teeth of the. ratchet wheel, said lever having a part projecting through to the outside of the carriage, a hand lever pivotally held to the carriage frame on the outside thereof and having a cam-acting end adapted to engage the projecting part of said arm to release the tooth to permit the platen to be moved to any desired position.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage having upward extending end plates one of which has a slot, of a platen mounted on said carriage, a ratchet wheel movable with the platen, an arm pivotally held to the carriage on the inner side of one end and having a pin projecting through said slot in the end of the carriage, said arm having means to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel to prevent movement of the platen except in one direction, a spring normally forcin the arm in one direction, a. lever pivotclly held to the carriage on the outside of one end thereof and having a recess at one end forming a seat for said pin and so positioned as to release the arm when moved in one direction to permit the platen to be moved freely in the carriage.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with asupport, of a line-spacing lever pivotally held to the axis of the platen, a spring for forcing the lever in one direction, a pawl movable with the lever, a rotary device having a plurality of sides arranged in the path of movement of the pawl, a spring normally holding the device in Copies of this patent may he obtained 'for difierent positions, means carried by the pawl adapted to engage said device whereby diflerent movements of the 1i'nespacing lever may be obtained and relatively difi'erent rotary movements given to the platen, and a pin carried 'by the support for automatically releasing the pawl when said lever is in its normal position.
