Abstract

1,156,347. Selective printing. OLIVETTIGENERAL ELECTRIC S.p.A. 31 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 35165/67. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G4] In a printer in which the record material 5 is moving at a constant speed in line-space direction and at least one row of characters 4 is movable in a letter-space direction along a printing line, the characters have also imparted thereto a movement in line-spacing direction, such component of movement in the linespacing direction being equal to the line-spacing feed of the record material. As described the row of characters 4, or several rows of characters (see Figs. 5a-5d) are disposed on an endless belt or ribbon 1 so that when the characters are adjacent the record material they extend at a slight angle relative a line of printing. If, for example, the character A is to be printed in letter-space position at the left-hand side of the paper a hammer printing impression occurs immediately the character A is positioned at the left-hand position of the paper, but if the character A is required at the extreme right of the paper, the paper will have line-spaced a distance due to the continuous feed. The character A on the belt therefore has to be in an equally advanced position and the angle of inclination of the travel of the row of characters is arranged accordingly. The axes of the pulleys 2, 3 are correspondingly arranged at an angle. Hammer impression.-An electromagnetically operated hammer 31 is arranged in each character position and is long enough in line space direction to engage the first or last type in a row of characters on the belt. They are also stepped, one above the other, to equal the angle of inclination of the type. The hammers have a slight pivotal movement in line-spacing direction to allow for movement of the paper. Electrical operation.-See Division G4.
