To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Yonkers, county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the elimination of the clicking noise made by the type striking against the paper, common in most key operated machines.
The useful, new, and novel construction of the machine, will be further disclosed in this specification and the accompanying drawings.
Most of the parts are in duplicate, a group of similar-parts being combined at each side, but treated in the description as one to simplify matters, though what parts are in duplicate is readily understood.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation, having a part cut away to show the shift keys at the left end. the right side group of printing key levers being shown assembled to a point beyond the key rod from which point the levers are angled to form the key-board. This part of the lever is shown only with half a dozen keys. A similar group of key-levers would be assembled on the other side, but are not shown on the drawings. The spacing-bar is shown in three sections broken away at the ends and center. The balance of the operating parts are shown in plan view in this figure. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine, and operating parts. Fig. 3
is a cross-section on the line A through the type, drum, and projecting lever. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the.drum crank-shaft, the connecting levers, slidable stops, support-rod and actuating springs. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a spring actuated U-shaped bar,
and the normal holding bar. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of same with a printing key lever. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the connecting ends of the key holding bars and the co-acting upright lever. The carriage ends are connected by parallel rods 6 forming a supporting track forthe platen 7 which is supported on a shaft 8 revolving in the carriage ends. A rack 9 set parallel with the track has spaced teeth engaged by the spring 10 actuating the escapement lever 10, which is pivoted to a member 11 having its ends formed to slidably engage a supporting standard 17, and has a rod 12 set on its face to which is movably secured one end of a lever 13, the other end of which is pivoted to the lugs 14of the operating plunger 15 which is set slidably on a supporting rod 16 projecting from a supporting standard 17 and is encased in a spiral spring 18. The operating plunger is held to position by its end 15 sliding between the uprights 19 and 19 of the projecting lever 19 which has pivoted near the top an arm 20 having a T-shaped head 20 which stands in a T-shaped recess 21 extending around the drum when the type are assembled and formed by the recess 22 cut in each type 22. The type drum 23 has spaced. guide lugs 23 extending around its outer edge, which are engaged by the guide end 19 To the drum supporting standards 24 and 25 the crank-shaft 26 is journaled. And to each offset of the crank-shaft is ournaled an end of a lever 27 and to the other end of each lever is pivoted a slidable stop 28, mounted on a rod 29, and actuated by a spring 30. A rocking member 31 is pivoted at 19 to the lever 19, and has opposite arms 31 which operatively bear against the crank-shaft, and arms 31 having slots 31 which are slightly connected to the ends of a co-operating keybar 32 which co-ope-rates -with the key levers and has arms which are pivoted to the key lever pivot 33. The key levers 34 are assembled in duplicate groups on either A car side in close formation to beyond the key rod, then they are angled to form the key board. Each key lever is formed and spaced in agroup so that the character designated on the key'struck is in the printing range when the key head 34 intercepts the drum stop 28.
Each key lever is formed adjacent to the key-rod 32 and supporting rod 29 into a T head 34 which forms when the key levers are assembled longitudinal recesses 35 and 36. The slidable drum stop 28 travels .ports'the-slide member 1].

The machine operates as follo vs. When a key 3415 struck it produces a simultaneous action of thekey-b r 32, therocking member 81, crank-shaft 26, drum 23, lever 27and the stop 28,'Wl110l1 rotates-thedrum 3 untilthe stop sliding on the bar 29 compresses the spring 30 and is intercepted by the key-lever stop 84: which is drawn into the recess 35. The type printing the character designated on the key is held in the printingrange as the power in the struck key is transferred to the projecting lever 19, producing a simultaneous action of the lever 19,,plunger 15, lever 13, slide men'iber 11, and the escapement lever 10. This action forces the projecting lever 19 forward, setting the guide end19 between tWO of the guide lugs'23 holding the drum 23 in position as the arm 20 projects a type 22 printing the character on the paper held on the platen 7, forces back the plunger 15 sliding onthe rod 16, projecting from the standard 17, and stores the energy in spring 18. The lever 13- of the plunger 15 imparts a: lateral movement to the slidable member 11 which sets the escapement lever 10 in an advanced tooth in the rack 9. When-the struck key 34 is released the stored energy: in the springs 18 and SO autoi'i'iatically returns all parts tonor-mal posi tion, and advances the carriage one letter space. Whenthe carriage reaches the end of a line, it isfree to return when the spacing bar is held.
llaving thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new is:
1. Thecombination in a-typewriting machine, of a movable-carriage, a platen, a toothed rack, said rack operatively engaged by an escapement pawl pivo'tedto a slidably mounted reciprocatingmember, said member hinged to a spring actuated plunger, said plunger actuated by a universal-bar and printing i keys.
2. The combination in a typewriting machine,-of type operatively assembled in a rotatable drum, said drum mounted on a crank-shaft, said crankshaft operatively connected to opposed springact-uated gages, said gages slidably mounted to have their travel-intercepted when a key is struck in a range of keys, with means to print the character designated on the struck key.
3. The combination in a typeivriting machine, of type, said type carried inarotatably mounted drum, said drum mounted on a crank-shaft, opposed spring actuated slidably mounted gages, an oscillator, said oscillator having opposed upright arms operatively engaging said crank-shaft, and having opposed arms operatively formed into a universal bar, said universal bar actuated 'by printing keys, with means to print the character designated ona "key.
4. The combination :in-a typewriting machine of type, said type having means to be successively operatively engaged When assembled in a rotatable drum, said: drum mounted on a crankshaft and "having spaced'projecting lugs on its periphery, and
key controlled gages, an oscillator, said oscillator mounted on an upright hinged lever, said lever having means to operatively engage said type and said drum, a universal bar, printing keys, with means to successively bring within the printing range, project, and print, and return to said drum the type designated on a key.
5. The combination in a typewriting machine, of type, a rotatable drum adapted to carry said type, a crank-shaft adapted to rotate said drum, an oscillator adapted to operate said crank-shaft, gages adapted to control said drum, a lever adapted to engage said type, a universal bar, and printing keys, with means to print the character designated on a struck key.
6. The combination in a typewriting machine, of printing-keys having levers formed into opposed recesses, said recesses forming longitudinal recesses when said keys are assembled, spring actuated gages slidably mounted to travel in said recess until operatively engaged by a key to control the rotation of a drum, a spring actuated holding bar, said holding bar adapted to engage said recess when a key is struck to hold said keys aligned, with means to print the character designated on a struck key.
7. In a key machine having a platen, the combination of a rotatable drum, type formed to successively operatively engage a co-operative form on a member adapted to project and return said type to said drum, with means to print the type designated on a struck key.
8. In a type-Writer having a movable carriage, the combination of a rotatable drum adapted to carry type and mounted on a crank-shaft, a member adapted to project and return said type, an oscillator combined with a universal bar and printing keys,'said parts supported on a movable base mounted on a machine frame, with shift-keys having locking means, and adapted to set various characters on said type in the printing range.
9. In a type-writing machine having a movable carriage and an adjustable alarm bell, combined with a rotatable drum mounted on a crank-shaft and carrying type, means operable by printing-keys to print said type, and operate a striker adapted to strike said bell when it comes Within range, with a spacing-bar adapted to move said carriage in letter spacing direc- 1 tion.
