This invention relates especially to mechanism for producing the type action, and has for its object the provision of mechanism which will be noiseless in its operation, which will occupy a minimum amount of space so as to permit the standard number of type bars; and which shall be of im proved construction and operation.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended lit claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1. is a central horizontal section of a typewriter having one embodiment of the present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showlng one manner of applying the invention to a power-actuated typewriter.
As illustrated in the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a Woodstock typewritenbut it will be understood that it is applicable to other forms of machines. The numeral designates the base frame, having key levers 11 pivoted at 12 thereon and held in their uppermost position by springs 13in the usual manner employed in Woodstock machines. A transverse bar 13 extends across the typewriter frame and supports a plurality of sub-levers 14: pivoted at 15 thereon. Each of the sub-leversla has lid a bifurcated arm 16-which engages a pin,
17 on one of the key levers 11. The upright arm of each of the sub-levers 14: engages a slot 18 in a lever 19 pivoted at 19 on a bar 24 extending transversely of the frame of the machine. The typewriter frame is provided with a top plate 20 mounted for slight sliding adjustment in a front and rear direction. The plate 20 is provided with a rack 21 meshing with a pinion 22 actuated by a worm 23. The worm 23 is controlled by a shaft 24 having a finger-piece 25 thereon and an index 26 at the frontof the machine. By rotating the fingeriece.25 the plate 20 can be accurately a justed for-- wardly and rearwardly. The platen 27-13 mounted on a traveling carriage 28 in the usual manner employed in W'oodstock ma chines. 7 The plate 20 carries a plurality of spaced guideways 27, which form slideways extending in a radial direction from the printing point. A sliding type support 28 is provided with rearwardly extending gu1des29, WhlCl'ltIflVQl in the slots between the guideways 27. A cross-bar30 connects the guides 29 and is provided with a slot 31,
which receives a pin 32 carried by the end of a toggle link 33. A cooperating toggle link 34: is pivoted at 35 in a slot 36 formed in a block 37, which connects the plate 20 with the front guide 27. The links 33 and 34 are pivoted to one another by a pin 38.-
The lever 19 is provided with a slot 39, which engages a pin 40 on the toggle link 33. WVhen thekey lever 11 is depressed the lever 19 will be rotated in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, into the position shown in broken .lines in that figure. This will cause the toggle 33 34: to' be straightened, thus moving the type support 28 rearwardly into the position shown in broken lines. The type will be moved into engagement With the paper on the platen, but the action willbe one in which the impression is made by pressure rather than by the arrest of a blow. It will be seen that the impression is made at the time that the type reaches the end of its rearward stroke and that the movement of the type is limited by the extension of the toggle 33, 34. The plate 20 is adjusted so that the type will move the proper amount to 'give the impression desired.v If more sheets of paper are placed on the platen the space between the face of the type and the platen may be increased by rotatingthe thumb piece 25 to retract the plate 20. .The index 26 may be provided with suitable characters to indicate the amount of rotation, desirable for sheets of paper of ordinary thickness. A stop screw 41 is provided for limiting the upward movement of the toggle link 34 to arrest the links in their extreme extended position. The slot 31 permits any upward movement of the in 32 resulting from the action of the lever- 19 so that there is no upward pressure on the bars 29. The slot 39 may be made of suficient. length to prevent any upward force on the pin 40 and the two slots 31 and 39 give sufficient play to insure free operation of the toggle mechanism. The plate 2'0 will be curved to conform to the radial direction of the type bar carriers, and the lower ends of the lever 19 at the sides of the machine and the sub-levers 14 will be shaped to provide the proper cooperation for the various lateral positions of the type two of these links.

In Flg. 2 I have shown the manner of connecting the type action with power driven mechanism such as that shown in my prior application Serial No. 732,615, filed August 18, 1924. The actuating mechanism for the type carrier is the same as that described in connection with Fig. 1. The sub-lever 42,
however, is not connected directly with the key levers but is provided with an actuator 43 pivoted thereto at 44. The actuator 43 is provided with a tooth 45, which registers with a power-driven cylinder 46 having teeth 47 thereon for engaging the tooth 45.
A spring 48 normally holds the tooth 45 out of contact with the power cylinder 46, but upon depression of any key lever the corresponding actuated tooth45 is brought into engagement with the teeth 47. This contact is effected by a ta pet 49 pivoted to the key lever 11 at 50. lever 11 the tappet 49 moves the'actuator 43 downwardly into engagement with r the power cylinder 46, whereupon the actuator is moved forwardly until the contact face 51 thereof strikes a disengaging screw 52 and breaks the connection between the actuator 43 and the power drive 46. The actuator is then returned to its initial position by the spring 48. The forward movement of the actuator 43 produces the same action of the lever 19 and the type carrier 28 as is produced by the key levers 11 in the form of 80 the device previously described. It will be seen that the only effort required on the part "of the operator is to depress the key lever against the resistance of its spring 131 The actual force for operating the type carriers i is furnished by the power driven roller 46.

1. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a platen mounted on said frame for transverse movement relative thereto, said platen being shift-able for changing from onccasc to another, a type carrier slidably mounted on said frame, and actuating means for said type carrier, the transverse thickness of said actuating means not exceeding the transverse thickness of said typccarrier to permit said actuating means to be confined laterally to the space between the planes defining the lateral faces of said type carrier.

5. In a typewriting machine, a key lever, a type carrier, a support on which said type carrier is mounted for straight line movement, a toggle link for moving said type carrier upon 'its support and for limiting the movement thereof, a lever for expanding said toggle, power-actuated means controlled by said key lever for operating said lever, and motion transmitting connection separate from said key lever between said power actuated means and toggle expanding lever.
6. In a typewriting machine, a key lever,
movement toward said platen, a toggle carried by said support for actuating said type carrier and for limiting the movement thereof upon said. support, means for adjusting said support toward and from said platen, a lever for expanding said toggle, power-actuated means for operating said lever, and means controlled by said'key lever but separate therefrom for transmitting motion from said power actuated means to said toggle expandi-ng lever.
7. In a typewriting machine, a key-lever, a platen, a type carrier, a support on Whith said type carrier is mounted for horizontal sliding movement, a toggle comprising a pair of links connected together 'at one end thereof and having the opposite ends of the links pivotally connected to said support and type carrier respectively, a stop for limiting the upv'vard movement of said toggle, a lever for expanding said toggle, poweractuated means for operating said lever, and means controlled by said key lever but separate therefrom for transmitting motion from said power actuated means to said toggle expending lever.
8. In a typewriting machine, a type carriermountedfor straight-line movement, a
pair of toggle links for actuating said type carrier, one of said toggle links having a pin and slot-connection with said type carrier at one end of said link to permit movement of said end relative to said type carrier in a direction transverse to the movement of said type carrier, a lever connected with 'saidlink, and means for swinging said lever upon its fulcrum for straightening the tog- 40 gle, formed by said toggle links.
9. In a typewriting machine, a type car- 'rier mountedfor straight-line movement, a
toggle comprising a pair of toggle links connected together at adjacent ends and having. their opposite ends pivotally connected to a fixed pivot and said type carrier respectively, said togglebeing collapsible by movement of the adjacent ends of said links downwardly, an operating lever' for said toggle having pivotal connection with one of said links and arranged to straighten said toggle by raising the pivotally connected ends of the links thereof, a sublever for operating said toggle straightening lever, a 5 power drive, a key lever, and an actuator controlled by said key lever for connecting said sublever with said power drive.
