' GEORG- KROMM, OF STUTTG-ART, GERMANY.
EWRITING MACHNE.
Application filed January 5, 1917.
Specification of Ietters Patent.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L, 1313.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEoRG KROMM, citizen of the German Empire, residing at Stuttgart, Germany, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in T ypewrlting Machines, (for which I'have filed an application in Germany Dec. 9, 1915,) of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines and has for its object means for preventing the simul-' taneous action of two keys. In the absence of such means, the type carriers belonging to the keys are liable to be bent, thus. influencing unfavorably the appearance and alignment of the written matter.
The present invention relates to a device which forbids two keys being pressed down simultaneously. A second key can be pressed down only after a previously-pressed key is released and has, as well as the type carrier regained its original position.
The locking device forming the object of the present invention consists of a series of individual locking means movably juxtaposed below the type carriers. These looking means are so relatively spaced that when Y a key is depressed and the type carrier belonging to that key has entered the space between two of the locking means, all the rest of the locking means are moved laterally and rigidly pressed together, so as to lockor forbid movement of any other key.
The locking means are preferably loosely suspended on the teeth of thet-ype carrier carriage so that they may return into their original position after the raising of the type carrier of an actuated key. In this way, it is impossible even when writing quickly or when the machine is worked by a non-skilled writer, that two keysmay be depressed simultaneously. There are some similar devices known in the art, but they all employ a rigid transverse carrier requiring to be dis placed laterally, which required power and sometimes was the cause of troubles.
The object of the present invention is illustrated on the accompanying drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 respectively show the new device before and after the depressing of a key.
Fig. '3 is a sectional view, illustrating the relative position of the parts.
v Space between all locking means a. of a row between their heads f, corresponds to the thickness of a key lever. the series or roW of these are provided fixed movement.
When a key It is depressed, the correspond locking means (1. stops 9 limiting their mg type carrier or lever enters between two of the locking means and pushes them aside. These locking means press all the rest of the lockingmeans aside as shown in Fig. 2 thereby looking all the passages between the teeth 0 of the guide-plate or carrier (Z so that any other key lever e is prevented to pass.
The special construction of the locking means a is only a form or example. Other forms orarrangements which will still be within my invention will suggest themselves to skilled persons.
I declare that what I claim is 1. In a typewriting machine, a combshaped guide plate, key-levers movable between the teeth of said plate. and a succession of locking means below and normally in the path of the key-levers, said locking means having a limited motion and pivotally connected one to each tooth of said plate.
2. In a typewriting machine, a combshaped guide plate. key-levers movable between the teeth of said plate, and a succession 'of locking means below and normally in the path of the key-levers, said locking means having a limited motion and pivotally connected one to each tooth of said plate said locking members being pivoted at their upper ends and having key-engaging portions arranged below the pivot points.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORG KROM M.
