Abstract

9195. Rehder, M. W., and Voigtsberger, A. W. C. April 18. Codes. - An apparatus for converting telegraphic code figures into words, and vice versa, comprises a casing a having a series of slots I, II, IV, VI, VII behind each of which slides a plate c carrying numerals and letters in front and a number of teeth behind. The plates c are moved bv means of knobs b, projecting through the slots I, II, IV, VI, VII, to expose any pair of letters and numerals through windows d, e, f, g, h, i, k. Certain of the windows are adapted to be obscured by projections on a slide s, which can be moved into three positions and also to be partly obscured by cross-slides s, t, u. The teeth under the plates c engage a toothed roller m which carries at one end three figures 0, 1, 2 on a cylinder n. The plates c behind the windows d, f and those behind the windows h, k are respectively connected together. In use, the plates c are moved to reveal the numerals to be codified at the windows d, e, g, h, i respectively. A spring v holds the roller m so that it is turned by the movement of any one plate c without touching the other plates. One of the numerals 0, 1, 2 is thus eventually revealed at a window w, and the knob p of the slide o is adjusted opposite the same numeral near the slot r, thus covering- over certain and revealing others of the windows d, f, h, k, and so altering the sequence of the consonant-vowel arrangement of the word. A reversal of the process serves for decodifying. Two apparatus such as the above may be combined together, a second roller turning at onethird the rate of the roller m giving a second numeral to which the second knob p is adjusted.
