Abstract

125,032. Nicoletti, L. Nov. 12, 1918. Ciphers.-A cipher apparatus comprises bars e sliding in a frame and provided with numerals 0 to 9 placed side by side and repeated in the same order on each bar. The transverse member c of the frame is made with a slot c<1> through which a column of numerals may be seen. The bars are moved until the numerals in the column are according to an agreed numerical key. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the numerals then presented within the frame members a, b, c, d form a table by which the cipher can be formed by transposition of letters, according to any prearranged rule. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, exposed spaces g on a card placed behind the frame are filled in with the letters of the message. The cipher is then formed by writing the letters in line as they appear consequently in the vertical columns. The correspondent can, by setting his apparatus to the key and by reversing the process of re-arrangement of the letters, translate the code message into the original message. The bars e may engage each other by tongues h and grooves i, and may be provided with recesses l in register with each numeral so as to engage projections m on the member c of the frame and lock the bars in the set position. Each bar may be provided at the end with a differentiating character such as a Roman numeral.
