Sounding-apparatus.-In a sounding- apparatus of the Kelvin type, the drum A is clamped between fixed and movable friction disks d, e by means of a wheel-nut F located on a screwed part b4 of the shaft B which extends beyond the main frame C. The axial movement of the nut is transmitted to the movable disk e by means of a sleeve E, which also forms a bearing for the shaft. The shaft is held against rotation in one direction by a ratchet-wheel b2 and pawl b3; it may be driven by a motor M through gearing including an intermediate spurwheel m4 arranged to slide on a stud m5. An indication of the length of line paid out is provided by the position of a notched and verticallymovable rack-bar H, which is geared to a worm G mounted loosely on the shaft, and connected by a finger g to the drum. The cord is wound evenly on the drum by means of a reciprocating guide-fork K, which is connected by a bar k5 to a wheel k7 geared to the worm.
