Abstract

29,391. Ryland, T. J. F. Dec. 20. Variable-speed belt and friction gearing, of the kind comprising a gear element with side members such as u, v, Fig. 8, automatically pressed against a belt or a coacting friction member such as t, by cams f coacting with stops i in accordance with varying effective diameters, is modified to prevent the stops from destroying the cam-surfaces. The cams f take the form of a tandem series of helices, which vary in pitch to correspond with different individual diameters of the gear element, and the stops i are fitted with loose sleeves or rollers k, Fig. 5, which present flat surfaces m to press against the helices. Guides q substantially parallel to the cams f serve to separate the members u, v, which are connected by fingers p. In the frictional arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the member t is carried by a shaft s, which is carried by a frame z adapted to slide towards and from the member u, v on guides y. An inclined member z' secured to the frame z has a number of flat locking-faces 1 connected by inclines, the faces 1 being adapted to abut against a stop 2 to hold the member t against the member u, v in one of the proper working configurations of the member u, v. The stop 2 is carried by a laterally-movable frame 3, which is operated to change the speed by a lever 7. Spur gears 16, 17 on the shaft s and on the shaft r, which carries the stops i, are adapted to be connected for reversed driving bv an idler 20. The invention is applicable for driving motor-vehicles and lathes.
