Abstract

19,993. Kelleher, D. Sept. 4. Overlap joints with packing compressed by insertion of pipe; overlap joints with packing at base of socket. - Two pipes are joined by means of an internal ferrule and an external soft-metal sleeve which is reduced to compress packing against the pipes. A brass or like ferrule C, Fig. 2, and a lead or like sleeve D are respectively placed within and around the pipes A, B to be joined, the sleeve D being initially of the uniform diameter shown over the internal flange 11. Packing - rings 14, 15 are inserted, and the ends of the sleeve D are reduced as shown, brass or like ferrules 17 being then driven on. If a lead pipe is to be joined to one of hard metal, a ferrule C<1>, Fig. 4, having a thread 20 for the hardmetal pipe is used, packing 21 being inserted in the sleeve D; or if the second pipe is of cast iron, the ferrule is formed with a flange instead of a thread, and the joint may be made in the form of a right-angled bend.
