Abstract

10,530. Fennel, J. W. April 28. Bayonet-joints; overlap joints, cup-leather; with packing compressed by insertion of pipe. - A coupling, particularly for fire hosepipes, comprises a socket member in two parts 10, 11 screwed together and gripping a washer 16 which projects into the bore of the socket as shown in Fig. 5, and a spigot member 3 which is a snug fit within the bores of the socket members 10, 11. The washer 16 is deformed by insertion of the spigot, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it bears against a seat 22 formed by bevelling the end of the member 11. Bayonetprojections on the spigot member engage L- shaped slots in the member 10, and are held against accidental uncoupling by leaf springs 18 springing over the ends of the projections, Fig. 3. The screw-threads are of the same diameter and pitch throughout to facilitate interchange of parts and to permit the improved coupling to be inserted between the screwed nipple 2 on the hydrant and the ordinary hose coupling 25 which usually screws directly on to the nipple 2. A cap is described for closing the member 3 after removal of the hose-pipe, the cap having bayonet-slots and springs similar to the springs 18. A modified coupling is described for rigid pipes, in which the parts 3, 11 are integral with the pipes, and one bayonet-pin is used, in conjunction with a set-screw passing through the wall of the socket to prevent accidental uncoupling.
