Joints with yielding outer pipe compressed.-In an internally coned and grooved sleeve c for compressing the end of a rubber &c. pipe a on to a metal &c. pipe b, the bottom of t h e groove (or grooves) e lies in a cylindrical surface coaxial with the conical surface, so that the depth of the groove decreases towards the base of the cone. The grooves may be annular or helicoidal, and the sides of the grooves may be at right-angles to the axis of the sleeve as shown in Fig. 1, or oblique as shown in Fig. 3, which also shows the cylindrical surface in dotted lines.
