Screw unions; couplings, attaching pipes to.- Relates to pipe couplings for pipes, one at least of which is of compressible material, such as lead, rubber, or the like. Fig. 1 shows the invention as applied to connect two compressible pipes. An internal spreader 3, preferably made of some non- corrosive metal, such as aluminium or lead-antimony alloy, has tapering ends fitting into the ends ot the pipes, which have been previously spread for the purpose. External couplings 4, 5 are then applied and screwed together, by which means the compressible pipe is forced into contact with the spreader and a tight joint obtained. The middle portions of the spreader are made parallel to the axis of the pipes, so that the extreme ends of the pipes remain uncompressed, thus preventing the withdrawal of the pipe from the grasp of the coupling - sections. A sleeve 6 may be used if desired. For connecting iron pipes to compressible ones, the coupling 4 may be replaced by a screw thread on an enlargement at the end of the pipe, or the coupling 4 and spreader 3 may be made in one piece and screwed to the pipe, or the spreader may be formed on the end of the pipe itself. To prevent the coupling from becoming disconnected, a look, consisting of a hollow sheet of metal having internal faces corresponding to the external surfaces of the couplings, may be slipped over the latter.
