Abstract

17,312. Westinghouse, G. Feb. 21, 1912, [Convention date]. Composite and laminar springs; connexions and attachments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs. - Relates to shackles for connecting the ends of the usual laminated springs with shock-absorbing devices mounted on the vehicle frame, and consists in providing a shackle in two parts bolted together so as to surround at one end a bearing-member attached to the end of the spring, and at the other end pivotally connected to a shock-absorbing member sliding with respect to the vehicle frame. Fig. 2 shows the two parts 16, 17 of the shackle connected by a bolt 20 so as to enclose at one end a bearing-member 13 riveted to the end of the usual laminar spring 12 as shown in Fig. 1. The other end of the shackle pivots on a bush 22 carried by a pin 21, which is mounted in the lower part of a cross-head 3 screwed into the cylinder member 2 of a shock-absorbing device as described in Specification 29,449/12. A recess 18 for lubricating the pivots is provided between the parts of the shackle and communicates with a grease cap 19.
