Abstract

4747. Lawton, B. L. Jan. 4, [Convention date]. Composite and laminar springs; vibration - dampers; connexions, attachments, and adjustments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs.-Relates to vehicle shockabsorbers of the type in which a cam on one of two pivotally connected arms is adapted to stress springs carried by the other, and consists in mounting the springs in a holder which is capable of being adjusted relatively to the cam to suit varying loads without the necessity of disconnecting the shock - absorber from the vehicle. In the form shown in end elevation in Fig. 2 and in section in Fig. 3, the duplicated arms 1, mounted, for example, on the vehicle axle, are bolted to a shaft 3 on which is mounted a cam 6 engaging laminar springs 7 arranged in triangular form in a ring 8, and held in position by riveted plates 9. The ring 8, which is enclosed in a box-like casing 4, filled with grease and mounted between the extremities of the duplicated. arms 2 connected to the body of the vehicle, carries a bolt 10 which is adapted to slide in a slot 14 in the casing 4. The position of this bolt in its slot may be so adjusted, when the shock - absorber has been fixed in position that, when the vehicle is normally loaded, the springs 7 rest upon the low parts of the cam 6. The nut 11 is then tightened up, and, pressing the dust-plate 12 on the casing 4, locks the ring to the casing.
