Abstract

191,259. Smith, A. H. Dec. 12, 1921. Vehicles with removable bodies.-Relates to railway vehicles adapted to carry a number of receptacles for transporting goods without re-packing. The receptacles 13 are arranged in a lower series supported directly on the truck or vehicle body 2 and an upper series which is superposed on the first series and releasably locked thereto, whereby a lower and a superposed receptacle may be removed as a unit. The connecting means between an upper and lower receptacle preferably consists of a sliding bolt 22 and staple 23 on the upper receptacle co-operating with a hinged hasp 24 on the lower receptacle. The lower receptacle is positioned in the truck by means of projections 7 on the receptacle engaging guide-ways 5, Fig. 2, on the sides of the truck, which are also provided with supports 8 for preventing flexing of the central portions of the receptacles. The side-walls of the truck prevent opening of the doors of the lower receptacles during transit, while stops 16 on the doors of the receptacles engaging abutments 17 on the upper edges of the lower receptacles prevent opening of the doors of the upper receptacles. The walls of the receptacles are extended at 26 below the floor 25, for which supports 27 are provided on the tops of the lower receptacles. Gusset plates 10 with perforations 11 serve for attaching the chains of a crane.
