Lays; beat-up motions.-In order to produce a resilient beat-up, the connecting-rod 4 is connected to the lay through a batten arm 6 pivoted at 7 to the lay, or to an extension thereof, adjustable springs 10 acting between the arm and the lay. The extension of the springs is limited by adjustable bolts 15 and nuts 16 secured to projections 13, 14 on the lay and batten arm, and the compression of the springs is limited by stops 17, 18. Springs may be mounted on the bolts 15 to prevent shock when the lay moves back.
