Abstract

Cast-iron processes; oxide and cast-iron processes.-Pig-iron is treated in an electric furnace in a non-oxidizing atmosphere with 'basic slag, containing a large proportion of limestone and a little iron oxide, at a temperature just sufficient to maintain the slag in a liquid condition, and to effect the removal of phosphorus without modifying the carbon content. The slag is then removed, and a highly-basic slag free from iron oxide is used to eliminate the sulphur.
