Abstract
312,361. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. May 25, 1928, [Convention date]. Purifying and refining.-In a process for purifying pig iron in which the carbon content can be reduced, increased, or kept constant, the bath is covered with a dephosphorizing and desulphurizing slag which contains carbon in a solid or liquid form, e.g. tar or carbonaceous compounds. The process may be carried out in the forehearth or hearth of a shaft furnace or in a hearth or rotary tubular furnace, and the carbon content is varied or kept constant by relatively adjusting the quantities of the fining materials and the carbon and also the temperature of the materials. The slag contains the fining means, e.g. iron or manganese oxides as well as materials, such e.g. as oxides of alkaline or heavy metals, required to fix the phosphorus oxides formed. The carbon may be added to the molten metal before the addition of the slag. It is stated that the presence of carbon in the slag maintains the content of silicon and of manganese. Specifications 5084/88, 1947/02, 17131/06, 25581/10, and 162,618 are referred to.
