Abstract

22,963. LoubÚry, P. U. Nov. 3, 1911, [Convention date]. Paddle-wheels; driving-arrangements for; submarine vessels, special apparatus for. - Feathering paddle - wheels for propelling and supporting ships, submarines, and the like are arranged so that they are not wholly supported by the driving-shaft, 'and the adjustable cam gear is enclosed in a watertight casing. A transverse shaft g, Fig. 2, has at each end a hub m carrying vanes f to the shafts e of which are keyed rods d with rollers c which work in the cam groove b on a cam block a. The hub m works fluid-tight on a boss n attached to the skin of the vessel which takes part of the weight of the paddle-wheel. The crossshaft is driven by bevel-gearing h, i from an engine or from an existing longitudinal propeller shaft, which is suitably cut and provided with gear-wheels. The cam block a is attached to a sleeve r which can be adjusted for altering the phase by a chain and sprocket gearing s. The cross-shaft may be placed in the forward or aft parts of the ship.
