Abstract

[Addition to 20,466/11.] Moderating superheat.-Water is supplied to the saturated steam as it leaves the generator and before it enters the intermediate heater of the superheating-arrangement by a Dubian pump fitted in the water space of the upper drum. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement. The bell 1 of the pump is fitted near the outlet opening of the front header 10, and is connected by the open-ended tubes 2 with a chamber 3 surrounding the steam-delivery pipe 5. The chamber 3 is provided with an overflow 6 and with orifices 4, through which water enters into and is entrained by the steam passing through the pipe 5. To prevent such an accumulation of steam as would lower the waterlevel below the ends of the tubes 2, the bell 1 is fitted at the lower part with a slide valve 8, or with a tube 7 of comparatively large cross-section opening into the steam-space by a cap 7<a>. With the arrangement as described, an increase in the temperature and quantity of steam generated causes an increase in the amount of water supplied to the steam, and vice versa. The supply of water can be varied by providing tubes 2 of different cross-sections, or arranging them with their lower ends at different levels, as shown in Fig. 1. A number of bells may be provided, these being preferably formed by dividing a single bell by vertical partitions. For boilers having a number of upper drums, the steam-spaces are connected together and a chamber provided in the less highly-heated drum, this chamber being adapted to collect the water entering with the steam from the other drums and to supply it to the steam leaving the boiler. Fig. 6 shows this arrangement. The tubes r from the steamspaces of the various drums open into a chamber s provided with an outlet opening s<1> for steam and excess water. The pipe t leading the steam to the intermediate heater b passes through the chamber s and is supplied with water by curved tubes v. If too much water is supplied by the tubes r, the number of these tubes may be reduced, or a partition s<2> may be fitted in the chamber s, in which case the end plate s<3> may be dispensed with.
