Abstract
20,466. Steinm³ller, L. Sept. 15. Moderating superheat.-The saturated steam is dried and slightly superheated in an intermediate heater inserted in the piping between the boiler and the superheater and heated by the superheated steam, which is thus modified in temperature before passing to the engine or turbine. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement. The intermediate heater 2 is of tubular form and is so arranged that the saturated steam circulates inside and the superheated steam outside the tubes. The pipe from the boiler is shown at 1, the superheater at 4, and the pipe leading the superheated steam to the engine at 6. Connexions and valves are provided for passing the superheated steam direct to the pipe 6, for mixing saturated steam with the superheated steam, and for by-passing the saturated steam either wholly or in part round the heater 2. Water may be sprayed from a pipe 32 into the pipe 1 to reduce the temperature of the superheated steam. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the boiler is fitted with two outlet pipes 20, 21 for wet and dry steam respectively. The amounts of wet and dry steam passing to the superheater 4 are determined by a three-way valve 25 operated automatically by a thermostat 23 in the pipe 5 or a thermostat 24 in the pipe 6. Instead of the valve 25, separate valves may be fitted in the pipes 21, 3 and operated together from a common shaft.
