Abstract
210,263. Clark, G. M., (Superheater Co.). Jan. 10, 1923. Overheating of superheating tubes, preventing. -For the purpose of maintaining a flow of steam through the superheater at all times, the steam space of the boiler is divided into two parts of unequal steaming capacity and connected with each other and the superheater, suitable controlling means being included. The steam space is divided by a partition 18 into two parts 19, 20 which are connected by a pipe 21. When steam is used by the engine, wet steam passes from both spaces 19, 20 to the dome 6 thence by pipe 7 to the inlet chamber of the superheater header 8 flows through the looped tubes 13 back to the delivery chamber of the header 8, and thence past the open throttle 14 to the engine; the valve 22 is thereby closed, and cuts out a branch pipe 23. When the throttle 14 is closed, the valve 22 is moved to open up the pipe 23 to the steam space 19 and shut off communication through the pipe 21 between the steam spaces 19, 20. Steam is generated in the space above the furnace 1 faster and at a higher pressure than in the other space 20, consequently the flow is now from the space 19 through the pipe 23 to the normal delivery chamber, passes in reverse direction through the tubes 13 and out through the normal inlet chamber and pipe 7 back to the space 20. A safety valve 24 is fitted to the boiler at the steam drum. In place of the external connecting pipe 21 an opening may be provided in the partition 18 which can be closed by a plate when the throttle is closed and the valve on the pipe 23 is open. Such closing means may be linked for joint actuation with the throttle control. In water-tube boilers with top transverse steam drum, the drum is divided by a partition parallel to its axis, and the two steam spaces so formed are coupled to each other and to the superheater as described above.
