[Classes 64(i) and 123(ii)] A steam generator or hot-water boiler comprises an assembly of inverted U- shaped sections enclosing a combustion chamber 19, each section being constituted by an upwardly extending tube 26a which is disposed at one side of the combustion chamber and is bent horizontally at 26b above the latter to connect with an aligned header 6 between which, and a lower header 7 or 7a, there extends a nest of tubes 2 forming the other side of said chamber 19. The lower headers 7, 7a of adjacent sections are preferably located in two different horizontal planes but are all connected to a common inlet water header 31, and the tubes 26a are also connected to an opposed water header 33, the ends of the two headers 31, 33 having communicating pipes 48. Similarly the headers 6 are connected by outlets 5 to a hot-water collector 27, or steam-and-water drum, having an outlet, indicated by an arrow, and also by a pair of downcomers 53 which lead back to the header 31 and, in the case of a hot-water boiler, have a feed or return water inlet 54. The front and rear of the combustion chamber are defined each by a vertical screen of tubes (not shown) extending between lower and upper headers 31, 33 and open into the collector 27, the tubes in the front screen being shortened at the location of a cleaning door 41. The tubes 26a, 26b in the side and top walls, also those in the front and rear walls, are provided with diametrically opposed fins or ribs 32 to prevent passage of gases therethrough; similarly the row of tubes of the nest 2 adjacent the combustion chamber 19, also certain transverse rows, are finned more or less as, for example, at 18, so as to compel the gases to flow therethrough endwise in a tortuous path from the said chamber to an underground flue 17. The boiler has an enclosing casing consisting of sheet-metal panels such as 58, 59, 61 lined with glass wool 62.
