Abstract

Gearing varying in ratio as drive is applied to one or other terminal shaft.-A dynamoelectric machine 5 is used as a motor for starting an internal-combustion engine 1. The dynamo shaft 21 is connected to the engine shaft through spur-wheels 2, 3, a shaft 4 and gearing 6 arranged to work as reducing gear when the machine 5 drives the engine. This drive is effected through pairs of planet-pinions 24, 23, Fig. 2, carried on a plate 20 fast on the dynamo shaft 21 and engaging a spurwheel 17 fast on the shaft 4 and a spur-wheel 26 integral with a ratchet-wheel 27. When the motor turns the engine, the drive is through the planet-pinions, pawls 28 on a fixed plate holding the ratchet-wheel 27 and its spur-wheel against rotation. The shaft 4 drives the shaft 21 through the ratchet-wheel 18 and pawls 19.
