Abstract

Winding.-A machine for winding surgical bandages, ribbons, &c. comprises a casing A, Figs. 1 and 2, fitted with a clamp B or other fixing-device, and containing a spring which drives a spindle a through suitable gearing. The spring is wound up by a handle g and released by a brake i. For securing the end of the fabric, the spindle a may be split as shown in Fig. 1, or may be fitted with a long spring. Alternatively, it may be fitted with a needle a<4>, Fig. 5. For winding fabrics on a hollow core, the device shown in Fig. 2 may be used, in which the core is threaded on the spindle a and clamped between a fixed flange b and a sliding flange b'. In a modification, means are provided for rotating a solid core. Guiding-means may be provided consisting of sliding blocks o carried by a rod m secured to a swivelling arm n. The winding-device may he fitted with a centrifugal stop-gear to prevent accidental winding in the event of the fabric being released. One of the features of the invention is that the roll of fabric can be slid axially of the spindle a.
