639,910. Fatigue testing of materials. TAYLER & CO., Ltd., D. F., and BROOK, G. B. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4043. [Class 106 (ii)] Wire for spring manufacture y is tested by winding it under a predetermined tension around a mandrel r of the same diameter as the wire, unwinding, and re-winding until the wire breaks. A base plate a carries in bearings a shaft b provided with a hand wheel e and a friction drive wheel l. One end of the shaft b is provided with a hole m for securing one end of the wire to be tested, and is counterbored to accommodate the free end of the mandrel r. The mandrel r is held in a fixed chuck n in a tailstock p mounted on the base a. A lever v is arranged to grip the wire by screw means x and is keyed to a shaft s to which at the far end is secured a lever u which may be weighted to provide a predetermined tension on the wire during winding and unwinding. In operation the wire is wound on the mandrel by rotation of the hand wheel l, the lever v moving radially towards and away from the mandrel as the wire is wound and unwound.
