Abstract

870,205. Winding bobbins. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., PRATT, J. W., and ROBERTS, M. Feb. 18, 1958 [Feb. 19, 1957], No. 5527/57. Class 120(2) A bobbin winding machine includes means for rotating a bobbin to wind thread thereon, means for holding a leading end portion of the thread after it has been connected with the bobbin and means acting to cause said portion of the thread to be cut or broken close to the bobbin, during the rotation of the bobbin, as a result of tension applied to it in the winding of the thread round the bobbin. The machine shown comprises a lead 1 mounted on the upper end 3 of a column and having rotatably mounted in it a winding shaft 5 carrying fast and loose pulleys 7 and 9 driven by a belt. Secured on a spindle 21 rotatably mounted in the upper portion of lead 1 is a lever 23 having an arm 25 which at its outer end has secured on it a block 27 having two notches, through one or other of which the thread passes. Should a knot or other irregularity catch in the notch the lever 23 is pivoted and the rope drive is moved from the fast to the loose pulley to stop the machine. The lever 23 has a downwardly extending arm which carries a block 37 arranged to fit closely between the flanges of the bobbin 39 and bear against the thread as it is wound on the bobbin. As the winding proceeds the block 37 is moved outward and when the bobbin is full the belt shaft mechanism is operated to stop the machine. The bobbin 39 has in each flange a relatively small hole one of which is arranged to engage a driving pin 53. Before the bobbin is placed on the shaft 5 the leading end portion of the thread is threaded through the other hole 55 and is thus connected to the bobbin. The bobbin is then placed on the shaft 5 and the thread end clamped in a clamp 57 carried on an arm 63 which is pivoted on a stud 65 for movement towards or away from the bobbin but is normally urged away from the bobbin by a spring 67. When winding commences tension in the thread between the hole 55 and the clamp 57 causes the arm 63 to move towards the bobbin until such movement is arrested by a stop screw 71. This movement allows the thread end to be secured to the bobbin under adequate tension. Further rotation of the bobbin applies increased tension to the thread between the hole 55 and the clamp 57 and this tension together with the pressure on the thread by the edge of the hole 55 causes the thread to be severed or broken close to the bobbin. Specification 806,265 is referred to.
