Abstract

924,669. Winding and reeling. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Oct. 14, 1959 [Oct. 17, 1958], No. 33214/58. Class 83(4). Coiling apparatus, for wire or other filamentary material comprises a drum of circular cross-section, means rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the drum for laying the wire under tension on to the peripheral surface of the drum in the form of a number of turns travelling in the axial direction of the drum, and a roller movable around the periphery of the drum and adapted to hold the wire against the peripheral surface of the drum at a point displaced in the axial direction of the drum from the point at which the wire is laid on to the drum. Wire 23 passes over a pulley 22, down through a hollow rotated shaft 6 over pulleys 17, 13 and through straightening rolls 15, 16, all mounted on an arm 11 secured to the rotating shaft 6, and is laid on a stationary drum 3, the turns 24 thus formed gradually moving downwards on the drum to fall into a container placed therebelow. To retain several turns of wire on the drum 3 before the wire is allowed to fall away, there is provided a roller 28 carried at one end of an arm 26 pivoted on the arm 11. The arm 26 is counterweighted and a spring 31 urges the roller 28 against at least one turn 24 of wire in a plane beneath the plane at which the wire is laid on the drum. The roller 28 may be mounted on a separate arm from the arm 11. The wire may be led to the pulleys above the drum 3. In a modification the drum 3 is rotated and the roller 28 rotated at a slightly greater speed.
