TWINE-REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 13, 1910. Serial No. 577,017.
My invention relates to improvements in twine reels of the class in which a roll or spool of twine is rotatably supported in such a manner that the twine may be reeled off in the lengths required.
The main ob 'ects of the invention are, first, to afford improved means for frictionally controlling the rotation of the roll or spool of twine; second, to permit the use of finished and glazed twine or cord as Well as the unfinished variety heretofore employed, and third, to allow various sizes of rolls to be used, and to prevent the twine from becoming loose or knotted, and from escaping over the ends of the roll.
These with other details of the invention will be hereinafter more particularl pointed out and described, and illustrate on the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the reel with a roll of twine in place thereon, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of-the same.
As illustrated in the drawing the reel comprises a support comprising a base or attaching portion 1, having screw holes 2 through which screws may be assed for securing the reel in any desire position. The sup ort is in the form ofa yoke having 'substantlally parallel arms or standards 4 and 5 provided with holes 6 for receiving the ends. or journals 8 of the spindle 10.-
The spindleis provided with shoulders 12 onthe inner ends of the journals against which the standards 4 and 5 are adapted to bear. The supporting member is made of steel so that the arms or standards 4 areresilient and can be bent to engage the l shoulders-'12 with-any degree of friction in order'to retard the rotation of the reel and cause it to stop when the user ceases to draw twine from the roll. - The twine roll 14 is provided'with a co tral' passage 15 which may be lined with a tube or not and receives thescrew-threaded spindle 10. The roll is centered about the spindle and held in this centered position by flanges 16 and 18 providedwith wings screwed tightly against the ends of the twine roll 14 so that the npll is maintained in a centered position upon the reel and the strand of twine is prevented from slipping over the flanges to become entangled about the spindle. As the flanges l6 and 18 fit I tightly against the ends of the roll the twine is prevented from being drawn down between the end of the roll and the opposing flange and' thus becoming caught.

will be seen that any kind of twine may be utilized upon this reel since no matter how glazed or stiff the twine may be it can not slip off of the ends of the roll as is usual in highly glazed twine. Furthermore by bending the arms or standards 4 and 5 suitably the desired degree of friction may be maintained between said standards and the shoulders 12 to produce a drag or retardation upon the spindle so that the latter will not rotate under the momentum produced by drawing the twine rapidly from the reel, since the riction of the standards against the shoulders 12 can be made sufiicient to stop the reel substantially instantaneously after the user ceases to pull the twine.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am aware'that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the having wings on their outer faces for rotating them and having plane inner faces to engage substantially the entire end faces of a tube of twine, whereby the reel is adapted to held various sizes of tubes of twine, and the twine,"in unreeling, is from catching between the ends 0 the tube and said flanges, and means for frictionally revented arrest the engaging the shoulders on said spindle to "rotation of said reel when the user ceases to pull the twine.
2. A twine reel, comprising a U-shaped standard, the arms of which are resilient and are provided with alined apertures, a screw threaded spindle having its end portions journaled in-said apertures and provided with shoulders whichare frictionally engaged by the resilient arms of the standard, and a dpair of flanges each having a screw threa hub and means on its outer face for rotatmg the same to adjust said flanges toward and away from each other,
whereby tubes of twine of various lengths and diameters can be centered and securely clamped between said flanges to prevent the twine, in unreeling, from catching between the endsof the tube and the flanges, the
