This invention relates to a container for rolls of surgical dressings, such as adhesive plasters, gauze, absorbent cotton or the like, and has for its object to provide a convenient holder which may be removably inserted in a box or case inclosing the roll or rolls of dressing so that any desired length of the dressing may be unrolled and severed from the roll or rolls without the necessity of removing the same from the box or case; thereby guarding against such unnecessary handling of the dressing as might detract from its antiseptic quality The improved holder comprises two polygonal end heads, preferably octagonal or square, and of proper size to be easily slipped into the box or case, these end heads serving as supports for a spindle extending centrally through the roll or rolls of dressing, and serving as a support for the same. This central support or body part may consist of a tube or hollow spindle of any suitable material, such as paper or tin, the ends of said tube to be entered by blocks attached to the polygonal end heads; or this construction may be reversed by providing the end heads with tubes or sockets into which the ends of a roll-supporting spindle may be entered to be supported. The roll-holder, consisting of the separable parts referred to, may be applied to the roll or rolls of surgical dressing before the roll or rolls are in serted in the inclosing box or case, and when the parts are thus in place the polygonal end heads of the holder will remain stationary within the box or case so that the roll or rolls of surgical dressing may be unrolled more or less when some of the surgical dressing is to be cut off for use.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of one formof the improved container showing the holder and a roll of surgical dressing thereon. Figs. 2 and 3 are broken-out views showing other forms of holders, and Figs. 4; and 5 show diflerent forms of end heads for the holders.

Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a box of pasteboard or the like, said box being rectangular in cross section as well as longitudinally, and'13 denotes a cover for said box. Fitting loosely within the box 12 are end heads 14' forming part of a holder or support for a roll 15 of surgical dressing of any kind, such as adhesive plaster, gauze, absorbent cotton, or the like- These end heads will preferably be square, as shown in Fig. 1, octagonal, as shown in Fig. 5, or of other polygonal form so as to be non-rotative within the inclosing box. In the construction shown in Fig; 1 the end heads 14 are provided with centrally disposed blocks 16, secured thereto by nails 17, said blocks having a. loose sliding. fit within the ends of a tube or hollow spindle 18 which serves as a central support for the roll 15. With this construction it will be understood'that the tube or hollow spindle 18 may he slipped into the roll 15, or the material of the roll may be wound thereon, and the blocks 16 attached to the end heads 14 andzwhich fit slidingly and removably in the tube 18 may then be inserted into the said tube,these parts together with' said tube or hollow spindle forming a support or holder for said roll. This support or holder, with the roll of material mounted thereon, may then be slipped into the box 12, the polygonal ends of the support or holder, fitting within the rectangular box, being non-rotative, so that any desired amount of material may be drawn from the roll which is preferably supported clear of the sides and bottomof the box so that it may readily turn on its supporting holder when any of the dressing is to be drawn therefrom.

In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the end heads 14 are provided with short tubes or sockets 19 adapted to receive a spindle 20, so that when the said spindle has been inserted within a roll, as 15, of surgical dressing the end heads may be applied to said spindle in such a manner as to serve as a support for the same, and the whole may then be inserted within an inclosing box.

In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the end heads 14 are made somewhat thick and may be of wood or other suitable material. These end heads are provided with holes or sockets 21 for the reception of a solid spindle 22 which may be first inserted into a roll of surgical dressing after which the end heads may be applied to said spindle and the roll of dressing with its reel or holder may then be placed in an inclosing box.

From the foregoing it will be understood that the improved holder consists of a support or holder comprising nonrotating end heads separable from a. central body part in the form of a tube or spindle which serves as a central supporting body part for the roll of surgical dressing, said roll being of proper size so that when inserted in a box, as 12, it will'be supported clear of the sides and bottom. of the box in such a manner that it will readily rotate as material is unwound therefrom. This holder is particularly useful in connection with a roll of adhesive plaster which it is desirable to support in such a manner that it will be re lieved from pressure as much as possible; the central tube or spindle, serving as a sup port for the roll of plaster, distributing the weight in such a manner that the coils of adhesive plaster will not be unduly compressed or forced against each other.

The invention is not to be understood as being limited to the precise details herein shown and described, as variations in the form of the non-rotating supporting holder composed of separable parts and adapted to be removably mounted in a box or case may be made, within the limits of mechanical skill, without departing from the essence of the invention.

The roll of surgical dressing when mounted on the holder may have a sealed germproof covering 23 and in this form may be packed, for shipping or storing, in the inclosingbox or case. Such. covering will protect the dressing and will be opened or removed only when the dressing is to be used. When the roll is to be thus inclosed within the sealed germ-proof covering the end heads of the holder will preferably be of octagonal form, as shown in Fig. 5.

Although only a single roll of dressing is shown in the drawing it will be understood that the central core or spindle of the holder may receive a series of rolls or spools of adhesive plaster or other dressings of similar or different widths, for example, by dividing the roll 15 shown in Fig. 1 into sections in the planes denoted by the dotted lines sc-a:.

Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A surgical dressing package consisting of an. inclosing box or case, a. roll of surgical dressing, a holder for said roll comprising polygonal end heads closely but remov-- ably fitting in said box or case, and a sealed germ-proof covering, Within said box or case, inclosing said. roll and its holder.

2. A surgical dressing package consisting of an inclosing box or case, a roll of surgical dressing, a holder, non-rotatively and removably mounted in said box, for said roll, said. holder comprising a central body part fitting within said roll, polygonal end heads closely fitting in said box or case and supportin said central body part and being removable therefrom, and. a sealed germproof covering, within said box or case, inclosing said roll and its holder.

3. A surgical dressing package consisting of an inclosing box or case, a separable holder removably fitting in said box or case and comprising polygonal end heads, closely fitting in said box or case, and a central support, a roll or rolls of surgical dressing removably mounted on saiu support, and a sealed germ-proof covering, within said box or case, inclosing said roll or rolls and holder.

4:. A surgical dressing package consisting of an inclosing box or case, one or more rolls of surgical dressing, and a separable holder for said. roll or rolls comprising a central tubular body part, adapted .to support said roll or rolls, and polygonal end heads closely but removably fitting in said inclosing box or case so as to be non-rotative, said end heads being provided with attached blocks slidingly and removably fitting the ends of said tubular body.
