Abstract
12,240. Saurer, A., [Firm of]. May 26, 1911, [Convention date]. Reeds; beat-up motions.-A split or divided reed for weaving ribbons &c. comprises an upper row of teeth 2, Figs. 1 and 4, fixed to a plate 1 on a forked reed-carrier 5, and a lower row of teeth 4 fixed to a plate 3 secured by screws to a member 10, which is pivoted on a spindle 9 on the carrier 5, whereby the teeth 4 may be moved relatively to the teeth 2. A spindle 17 fixed to extensions 10<1> of the member 10 passes through holes 5<11> in the limbs of the carrier 5, which is pivoted on a fixed shaft 11. After the weft has been laid behind the teeth 4, the spindle 17 is moved downwards by cam- and-lever mechanism, whereupon the member 10 alone is first rocked and the reed is opened and afterwards the member 10 is moved with the carrier 5, the lower teeth 4 completely freeing the corresponding warp threads when these have been moved into the open-shed position. Afterwards the spindle 17 is raised, whereupon the teeth 4 are first moved relatively to the teeth 2, so as to close the reed, and afterwards, both rows of teeth 2, 4 are moved to beat-up the weft. The plate 1 is held in operative position by the engagement of a spring-actuated pin with a recess in one of the limbs of the carrier 5. When this pin is disengaged, the plate 1 can be turned up to facilitate the cleaning of the teeth 2. A spring-controlled brake-jaw 12 engaging a cylindrical hub portion 5' projecting from one limb of the carrier 5 prevents accidental movement of the carrier.
