Weft inserters not carrying bobbins &c., looms with.-In order that all looms may be supplied with weft from bobbins arranged at each side of the loom, a " shuttle '' or weftinserter 1, Fig. 1, operated by ordinary picking-mechanism is provided with fixed hooks 4 which have their points 5 bent horizontally towards the reed and are arranged parallel to an axis passing through the shuttle tips. This axis is arranged to make the shuttle non-symmetrical, so that the pickers 6 do not come into the paths of the hooks. A shuttle-positioning device is provided to ensure that the hooks shall be disengaged from the inserted loops at the correct time and without damaging the selvedge. This is effected by an arm 11, Figs. 5 and 7, on a spring-controlled shaft 10 which is mounted on a bracket 8 on the lay and carries an arm 12 having an antifriction roller 13. The arm 11 passes through a notch 19 in the shuttle-box. When the lav moves backwardly, the arm 11 enters a slot 7 in the shuttle and is rocked by the engagement of the roller 13 with a projection 15 on a ramp 14 secured to the loom framework. When the hook has been disengaged from the loop of weft, the shuttle is moved further to the left by the engagement of the roller 13 with a second projection 16 on the ramp 14. the hook being thus held clear of the selvedge during the beat-up. The weft thread 24 is adapted to lie in a notch 25 in the lay and passes through a porcelain or other guide 26 and a similar guide in a vertical bar 23 on the lav. At the moment of picking, the bar 23 is raised by a cam-controlled lever 27 to lift the weft into the path of the hook on the shuttle.
