Abstract

192,371. Boitel, A. Jan. 25, 1922, [Convention date]. Weft-inserters not carrying bobbins, looms with. -A " shuttle " to enable any loom to work as a continuous weft-feed loom has projecting beyond each end a hook 13, 14, which engages welt delivered from bobbins on each side of the loom and inserts such weft into the shed the inertia of the hooks causing one hook to project and the other to be retracted when the shuttle is struck by the picker. The " shuttle " or weft inserter itself contains no weft spool, but has movable mechanism inside comprising hooks 13, 14, the stems 10, 11 of which are connected to a spring-controlled sleeve 6 sliding on a rod 4. In operation, the shuttle 1, when in the right-hand box, on being struck by the picker moves to the left, the inertia of the hook mechanism causing the hook 14 to protrude while the hook 13 is retracted. A finger 19 on the sleeve 6 then engages with a hole in a fixed spring strip 17, thus holding the hook mechanism in the position shown in Fig. 3. The weft is then presented to the hook in any suitable manner, for example by the device shown in Fig. 6 as applied to the other side of the loom when the hook 13 protrudes. The weft thread passes from a bobbin through a fixed eye 23 and a movable eye 25 formed in a bar 26 resting on a lever 27 raised and lowered by a cam &c. The weft 22 is thus raised at the proper time for the hook 13 to engage it, and lowered into the notch 28 to allow the shuttle to pass at the beginning of its pick. The hook 14 having engaged the weft on the right-hand side moves along with the shuttle from right to left, and draws a double shoot of weft through the shed. When the shuttle arrives in the left-hand box, the lay in beating up frees the weft from the hook 14 which is on its side, while a stud fixed on the loom pushes a spring strip 17 fixed in the shuttle, out of engagement with the sliding sleeve 6, so that the spring 16 may push back the sleeve hooks to mid position ready for the next blow of the picker. Any number of weft-distribution bars may be arranged on each side of the loom and may work in determined order to allow weaving in colours. These devices may be operated by jacquard or other apparatus. Likewise any number of weft threads may be engaged at the same time by one of the hooks to produce varied effects.
