Tanning with special chemicals.-A tanning- agent consists of a soluble aromatic compound obtained from formaldehyde, or a body giving rise to formaldehyde, and an aromatic phenol or phenol derivative, the compound containing one or more than one acid salt-forming group. If the condensation products obtained be insoluble or soluble with difficulty, they must be treated with sulphonating - agents. In an example, in which the parts are by weight, 54 parts of formaldehyde (containing 30 per cent by volume) are treated with 174 parts of paraphenol-sulpho acid at a temperature not exceeding 35‹ C. The solution is then nearly neutralized by an alkali, and when diluted to three-fifths of a degree BÚ. is used as a tanning- bath which is gradually strengthened to 5‹ BÚ. during ten days.
