Abstract

8182. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. April 4. Breech actions, sliding barrel and breechblock.-Relates to recoil-operated guns of the type in which the barrel and the breech-block are locked together during the whole of the recoil, the breech-block being then retained by a pawl while the barrel runs out and opens the breech. According to the invention, the sear and the retaining-pawl are mounted on a plate detachably secured to the gun casing and locked in position by a catch which cannot be unlocked unless the sear is raised by being engaged by the firing-pin. In Figs. 1, 4, and 5, the invention is shown applied to a breech action of the kind described in Specification 29,668/10. The plate D, carrying the sear C and the pawl B, is secured to the casing by interrupted threads d<1> and is locked against rotation by a catch comprising a plunger E, Fig. 4, and a carrier E<1>, Fig. 5, pivoted to the plate D. The plunger E has a lug e<Î> engaging a recess in the casing, and, when the sear is disengaged from the firing-pin, as shown in Fig. 1, is locked against upward movement by a projection c on the sear. When the sear is slightly raised by the firing-pin, the projection c releases the plunger E, which can then be raised, thus allowing the carrier E' to be turned outwards and the plate D to be rotated and removed together with the breech-block and its spring and the firing-pin and its spring.
