Abstract

25,395. Ross, Sir C. H. A. F. L. Nov. 15. Breech actions, sliding- barrel and breech-block.- The barrel a and breechblock b recoil against a strong spring f, and are returned together to the normal position ; the breech is then unlocked and the barrel continues its forward movement against a weaker spring g, and opens the breech. The barrel is finally returned by the spring g to close the breech. The breech-block is locked to the barrel by a series of rocking hooks b<1>, Figs. 2 and 5, which move with the breech-block and are closed on to the barrel by a cam - ring c. The hooks are disengaged, when the barrel and breech-block move slightly in advance of the normal position, by the engagement of a projection b<4> at the rear of each hook with the back edge of the ring c. One of the rocking hooks is modified to form the extractor. To prevent firing except when the parts are in the correct position, the sear o, Fig. 2, is operated by a pin p<3> on the link p<2>, which is pivoted to the trigger p and to a vertical spring-pressed plunger q. The top of the plunger engages a cam w on the breech-block, so that it is depressed to bring the pin p<3> into engagement with the sear only when the breech mechanism is in the firing position. The breech can be opened by hand, by pulling the barrel forwards.
