[Cognate Application, 21,079/12.] Naval mountings.-Relates to manually-operated elevating-gear, and consists in arranging the gear so that it is capable of independent operation by two operators working different hand-wheels, one of whom moves the gun and sights together to follow the target and correct for the rolling and pitch of the ship, and the other works the elevating-gear in the ordinary way for the range. An indicator is provided to show the extent of the correction required for the rolling and pitching motions. In the construction shown, the worm B, Fig. 2, actuating the worm-wheel B<1> of the elevating-pinion A<1>, is rotated by the shaft C appertaining to the gun-layer's handwheel C<1>, and is also capable of being slidden along the shaft C, without rotation, by a screw-and-nut device D, d operated by the auxiliary handwheel D<1>. Other constructions involving the use of differential gearing are described. The indicator may consist of an open sight, or a spirit level, but preferably comprises a device with two pointers, one of which pointers is displaced by a pendulum, and the other is geared to the auxiliary elevating- mechanism. The elevation is corrected by the auxiliary gear until the two pointers coincide.
