Abstract

8896. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. May 26, 1911. Sights.-Relates to range-setting mechanism for high-angle-fire guns with independent line of sight, of the kind in which a cam is emploved for moving the pointer of the range dial or drum to regulate the sight angle of elevation in accordance with the altitude of the target. The invention consists in arranging the cam some distance from the trunnions, and in carrying the whole of the range-setting mechanism upon a bracket which is pivoted co-axial with the trunnions. The cam H is carried by a bracket H<1> which is pivotally mounted co-axial with the trunnion' axis G and carries the ranging-gear shaft J of the gun. During the pointing operation, the cam is moved axially along its spindle, without rota. tion, by suitable gearing, but during the ranging operation, the cam is rotated, without axial movement, upon its spindle. In this way, the section of the cam appropriate to the altitude of the target is brought against a roller g<3> on a bell-crank lever G<3>, G<2Î>, pivoted at g<2Î> to the bracket H'. A rack on the arm G<2Î> gears with a pinion g<2> on the boss of the range-dial pointer G<2>, so that during the ranging operation, the pointer is moved around the dial to the necessary extent. The range-dial G<1> is rotated through bevel and worm gearing by the ranging-gear shaft J.
