Abstract
5601. Boulton, P. R. March 6. Gas analysis.-An apparatus for the automatic and continuous analysis of gases, particularly flue-gases, comprises vessels a, b, preferably of equal size, a vessel 1 c containing absorbent solution, and valves j<1>, j<2>, j<3>, j<4> for alternately putting the vessels in communication with the flue and an ejector respectively, and with the vessel c. In operation, the valves j<1>, j<4> are opened and the valves j<2>, j<3> closed, the pressures in the vessels a, b becoming the same as those in the flue and exhaust pipe respectively. The valves j<1>, j<4> are then closed. and the valves j<2>, j<3> opened, whereupon an equalization of pressure takes places, the final pressure depending on the amount of gas absorbed. The proportion of gas absorbed is determined by comparing the final pressure with the mean of the pressures originally existing in the vessels a, b. For this purpose, branches l, v from the flue and exhaust pipes communicate with the compartments of a divided floating bell k, and a branch m is taken from the vessel c to the chamber y enclosing this bell. The motion of the bell is communicated to a bell-crank o connected to the recording-arm by a link p. To compensate for any variation, in the extreme pressures, connexions are made to opposite sides of a second bell s, so that the position of this bell is determined by the difference of the pressures in the flue and exhaust pipes. The motion of the bell is transmitted to the link p, and the connexion of this link with the recording-arm r is thereby varied by a block q<2> rising or falling in a slot q, the readings being altered accordingly. If however the absolute pressures at the inlet and outlet points are maintained at a constant value, then the compensating-bell s and its connexions may be omitted.
