2786. Ames, R. Feb. 3. Spigot-and-socket joints held by cement.-A flared socket is provided with a recess I to hold mastic clay &c., a conical shoulder J serving to aline the pipes, a shoulder G formed by making the mouth of the socket thinner than the other part, a groove H in the face of the socket, and the usual holes Q through which grout is run. A fillet of clay P is placed at the mouth of the socket as shown to retain the cement until set. The clay may afterwards be replaced by a fillet of stiff cement. The joint may be made with stiff cement in the usual way, instead of grouting.
