2129. Lawaetz, H. J. Jan. 26. Levelling - staves.-In order to read off directly the absolute elevation of a spot when the elevation of an adjacent spot is known, the staff is provided with a movable belt d passing over pulleys b, c and bearing numbers corresponding to graduations on the staff. The belt is adjusted on the spot of known altitude to give the correct reading when viewed through the telescope. The reading at any other spot will then also give the absolute elevation of the same within the limits of the staff. The staff is provided with a screw foot e for fine adjustments.
